My suspension air compressor is rattling again. Runs 5 to 30 seconds on start up, likely as it should with the loud, loud noise. Any alternatives to dealer replacement at $640 ?.

Check to see if the muffler/hose disconnected or muffler split/cracked. Might be ok & just running "open header".

Check rubber isolators also.

Check the mounts and the muffler.

While it CAN be a mechanical issue, most times when the compressor gets loud it's on its way out.

Arnott or Suncore. It's an easy job to do yourself with simple hand tools.

If you replace the existing one drill some holes in the pan it sits in. Water builds up in there and is what prematurely kills the motor.
