Frequently.

I had my shifts firmed up some time ago and a byproduct was that if I am cruising at about 42-43 mph the tranny hunts about.

So when the speed limit is 45 and I am stuck behind a regulator who meanders between 40 and 45, I generally turn the OD off to avoid the hunting.

Hills, offramps, when I need a little more gear to pass someone and don't want the trans to kick down to second on the freeway.

I don't use it as much anymore. I've been milking 21mpg out of my car lately.

i usually turn it off (light on) until i hit 30-35 mph then turn it back on (light off) then back off to pass people or get on the ramps to the highway..

This is the number one cause to burning out your OD band in the tranny.

So....you guys recommend turning the OD off(light on) on the freeway? Me confused
I just know that when driving regularly the OD should be on (light off) and if i wanna go WOT its better to take the OD off (light on) because it gives an "extra kick"

Im just trying to understand this OD function a bit more..enlighten me:)

I'm pretty sure what Haggis is referring to, is preventing a kick down from 4th gear to 2nd gear which is a BIG NO NO! So if you are going to really get on it, he's recommending (and I firmly agree with him) hitting the OD switch (light on) to prevent a two gear kick down.

Did I say that correctly, Haggis?

Not very often. My car is geared pretty well for the driving I do with it.

I may turn it off if I'm the first car in line at a red on a two laner though :D

Always on, unless I need to get on it right quick.

You want OD on (light off) when on the highway.

So lets say on the street you have the OD off( lights on) and on the highway OD on( light off).. Correct...

My understanding is you turn it off around town( under 45-50) so the tranny isn't shifting so much, then at graeters, er greater than 50mph you turn it on. Except for the passing and WOP like the other said.
