My 2003 just turned 90k. While on a four hour road trip, the radio started acting up. The FM stations played fine for a few minutes. Then the volume when very low with static. Turning up the volume all the way, the radio could be heard but just barely. The CD, Tape and AM played fine. Any help ?? Thanks.:(:(

The factory radios often have some bad circuitry for the fm bands I believe and will act just like you said. Pretty much go static on fm...It's a flaw from the factory really. Mine did it shortly after buying it 2011. so I did a recommended swap/mod.. Switching to the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner audiophile unit..it's plug and play..steerign wheel controls still work, but the cd player in trunk will not, but these units have a 6 indash cd player so it's a moot point really. And it powers the factory sub and it sounds better too.

Here is the model number

Escape Audiophile 6L8T-8C815-FD

I think they were from 2005-2007?

I found mine thru car-part.com and they also are found on ebay..pricing is $125 to $200 range. A few memebrs here might still have one for sale

The FM tuner in the stock radio goes "defective" after awhile. There is really no easy way to fix it.

You can go with an after market headunit (double DIN), get your OEM radio fixed or get the Escape unit.

Ford Audiophile unit to replace stock MM:
6L8T-18C815-FD
Runs the factory sub and there is no need for the stock changer as the audiophile system is a 6-disc in unit player. Everything is right at your finger tips including steering wheel control function.

The unit will not work with the factory CD changer but is has an internal 6 CD changer.

Mine did that too, I found a Factory NIB replacement and was going to send the defective one to FBM to mess with, when all of a sudden it started working again....that was over a year ago. Like with the LCM, I await the return of the gremlins in the radio , probably at the most inopportune time.
