Just drive from Chicago to Bayonne, NJ today. Car ran great all the way here but after getting off the expressway and into traffic, noticed a low-pitch whine that accelerates with RPM. it's not the power steering pump. All indications show normal. Car appears to be running fine. Oil pressure is fine, as are levels. We're leaving on a cruise in the morning and I'm not really going to have time to deal with this until we get back next week.
Any ideas in the meantime??

What was your vacuum reading? If you have a leak, you will have more whine...

Oh thanks. I never knew that. (Sarcasm off)
I've had 2 trilogy Marauders. This is not a normal sound. More like a low growl.
Vacuum seems fine. I'm afraid to tromp it though.

Bad Boost bypass would be my first move assuming you have at minimum 15"s vacuum.
I only have 10"s at idle now from my cams. My blower always whines.

Gotcha. Didn't mean to come across as sarcastic. In addition to checking the vacuum lines and bypass, you may want to check the oil level and top off if it's low.

Well....this is the h/c Aluminator. I'll check everything good when I get back down there. May have to make a stop in Detroit on the way home. ;-)

Idler pulley(s)? I had one go bad on me recently and I swore it was the p/s pump or alternator. I concluded it was an idler pulley since the sound didnt change with steering input or changes in electrical load.
I replaced both 6203 bearings on the idlers and now she's quiet as a mouse. A 4.6l DOHC V8 mouse...

Blackbird had a sound that I thought was a bad bearing(s) in the alternator. Turned out it was the bearing in the pulley right NEXT to the alternator. I found out when it let go and trashed the belt, and put a gouge in the timing chain cover. Don't drive it until you check this.
Also had a noisy bearing in the grooved pulley mounted to the passenger-side head. Caught this one before it disassembled.

Well.....sat in a ford dealer in New Jersey all day yesterday. It's a bearing in the S/C. After checking with Jerry Barnes and Mike Ardrey, we pulled the belt and set on our way back to Chicago. This thing is pathetic "stock".
I'll let you guys know how this pans out. I'm sure it's going to be expensive.....again.

If it's just a bearing prolly won't be too bad, as long as the blower didn't lock up. THAT gets expensive, ask me how I know...:(
Stiegmeier does core rebuilds, IIRC, a blower front end rebuild is around $400.

+1 on the pulley:

I've changed it about 3 times now.
Makes a marbly sound that makes you think the blower is FUBAR. Confirm using automotive stethoscope.

If you have the means and the know how, you can get all the parts required for a rebuild here:
