Does anybody know the alloy used in our exhaust? One of the 400 series alloys perhaps? Doubt it is 304 or 316.
I have to have a slight modification done to a tailpipe, and want to use the same tubing.
Thanks,

I'm gonna say 304. 316 is used primarily in marine (i.e. salt water) applications, and 321 or 347 are overkill, IMO, for a factory exhaust system.

Contact Cones Engineering. They made the original tips for Megs.

I think he is talking about the exhaust tubing not the actual tips? the tips are prolloy 304, the tubing is prolly 409 or lower grade.

Good point, 304 is prolly used in more aftermarket stuff, OEM could well be 409.

My guess also would have been 409. 304 is expensive, at least by Ford standards.

One way to check would be with a magnet. Magnets won't stick to 304, but will to 409 due to the lower chromium and nickel content.

It isnt 304 since 304 will not rust on the surface like 409 which will get slight surface rust.
