Yes you can.

My understanding is that the 'S'- spring in the M-4700-C kit is for 31-spline axles, and if you have 28-spline axles you need to get the 28-spline 'S'- spring separately ?

From what I researched unless I missed something the 31 spline is just a heavier spring than the 28. Help me out, I am learning this stuff

This is what I bought:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-4700-c

It says "Notes: Designed for 1986 to 2004 Mustang with non IRS axles"

No mention of 28 or 31 spline axles. Do non-IRS mustangs up to 2004 even come with 31 spline axles?

The dope straight from the horses mouth:

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField= 6942

It states: "31 spline S-spring, 28 spline applications require use of 28 spline S-spring not included"

Sooo I dunno... I do remember someone once mentioning that they used the s-spring from the Super Duty pickups because it was stiffer.

My friend just rebuilt the rear end of his 1995 Mustang GT and he said the new spring was quite a but beefier and real tough to install. In the end everything seems to work just fine however the tires do squeal a bit when he goes around corners.

Just reuse the 28. I have never once seen one wore out. That spring included is for the 31 spline and will fit, so I've read, by crushing it down in a vice.. Not something that I am willing to do on mine..

Video on how to install the S spring.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_TqMuV_MeA

This is the heavy duty S spring:
Ford Part Number: F3TZ-4214-A
Oem replacement clutch pack spring that fits 1999-2004 Mustang Cobras, 2001-2004 Mustang Gts and all 2005-2010 V8 Mustangs.

This spring can be used as a heavier upgrade for all 1986-2000 8.8" Mustangs. It is much more difficult to install and requires compression.

*Factory equipped on 2000 Gt model Mustangs built after 8/2000.

This is the normal S spring:
Ford Part Number: E0AZ-4214-A

The only difference I could find is the heavy duty / F150 S spring is wider than the normal S spring and is more difficult to install. Watch the video and you'll see how you can install it.
