So I saw at least one other thread on this noise and it ended up being a spun bearing so that's a priority on my inspections. (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=87251) I did order a mechanic's stethoscope to try and isolate the noise first, though.

Other info: I just pulled the engine and rebuilt the top end due to broken timing components. On startup I overheated quite a bit due to... well, stupidity. I filled the coolant reservoir but it didn't flow down to the tubes, probably hydrolocked. Whatever the cause, it was hot enough to cause detonation. My initial oil was Mobil Synthetic 5W-20, and after 200 miles in the "fresh" engine" I changed it out for Motorcraft Synthetic blend 5W-20.

Did this noise start immediately after the rebuild i.e. on the first start, or only after it overheated?

Neither actually. The overheat was on the first startup. Dumped a bunch of water+coolant straight into the tubes immediately, then drove it without incident for two weeks.

Please don't run that, that is bearing noise. :( Get under the car with the vid cam, set it near the oil pan and record. I bet it's a lot louder and the fact that it doesn't go away with rpm, rod bearings.

That sounds very familiar.
