so I am not a motor head, but I the the oil changed in my MM today... they said that ford has started reccomending Durablend syenthetic oil for my car.... but considering the fact that it is $10 more, and they said the same thing to the guy next to me not 10 minutes ago about his grand marqui I told him no.... and got the regular Valvoline 5x20....
I started to wonder about it, what it does and such, so I tried to research it... I found this but it did not help me much.. I was also told once that once you move to synethetic you can't got back... it this true? is synthetic really better for my car, or just the enviorment? and finally what type of motor oil do you all use? if there are more options than I am aware, perhapes a mod would be kind enough to add those options to the poll.

I like Amsoil. I also have used Royal Purple.

Mobil 1 here, but not before 10,000 miles on the odometer or until the car is broken in. You can switch between dino/synthetic anytime you want, and there is no environmental advantage to synthetic that I'm aware of. If you are going to change your oil every 3-5k it probably doesn't matter what type of oil you use, but synthetic allows you to extend the change interval. For example, I have a 1997 Tracer with over 194,000 miles on the odometer. I ran Mobil 1 from 10k miles and changed the oil and filter every 8-10k after. Car still runs great, uses no oil between changes, great mileage, etc. Although I use Mobil 1 in my other vehicles I still change at 3-5k just to be on the safe side, but if I go over a bit I don't have to worry about getting it done right away. Hope this helps!

Nothing but baby oil for the missus and myself. Some folks recommend KY but use whatever floats your boat.

As for the MM, as Barry indicated so directly, the manual recommends a specific weight and type, which one can take as the minimum recommendation that will keep Ford out of the warranty courts and in the good eyes of the fuel economy Watch Dogs. From there, choose your poison, but remember to stay at least within the synth or synth-blend family and in the ballpark of the recommended viscosities.

While I'm still very certain that using conventional oils in the recommended viscosities won't result in engine meltdown, you paid this much for a high performance 4 door muscle sedan, you might as well use good oil to protect your machine in the event your engine experiences any of the extremes (very cold startup, high oil temps, etc.). For any other details, use of the search function will surely bring up similar discussions (although I am getting the impression some of the earlier threads were wiped out, as I can't find some of them using the search function).

I have run Amsoil in my vehicles since 1985. It really works great especially if your going to put a lot of miles on you MM.

Yes, another oil thread, but anyway.

Synthetic oil is better in every way, flows better when cold, better lubrication when hot, does not break down as quick.... Cost more but worth it. Porsche's and Vette's, and others, have Mobil 1 from factory. I use Amsoil 5/20, but you really need a preluber!

1. Oil is oil...I'm ignorant and don't care (or at least I won't for the next 5 minutes:help: )...whatever went in the car first time goes in the car (my vote).

2. Cruztaker deleted two posts...I cannot find a delete button anywhere around so I can do this...where the hell are they?!

3. Three is a good number...I like it.

Schermadness - "I was also told once that once you move to synethetic you can't got back... it this true? is synthetic really better for my car, or just the enviorment?"

The answer to question number one is not true. You can switch back and forth as much as you like.

Question two : Better for your car? Yes but for 3000 mile drain intervals in normal driving conditions the differences are so minor that you would never notice. Synthetics really shine in extreme conditions (cold, heat, towing, racing, forced induction, stop and go) and long drain intervals.

Better for the environment? Only if you use a long drain inertval. If you drain the either type of oil at 3000 miles it is hard on the environment. Synthetic oil allows you to go 7500 miles (or more) with no more stress or wear on your engine than regular oil at 3000 mile intervals. Thus, at 7500 mile intervals there is less waste oil (and filters) dumped into the environment and less crude converted to motor oil.

Having said all of that, I do not recommend exceeding the manufacturers drain interval for cars under warranty. After the warranty, extended drain interval should be monitored through used oil analysis (www.oaitesting.com).

I don't care what our MM.Net "think tank" will some day agree on here, few of them know what they are talking about to begin with.

They refuse to agree on anything anyway, no matter the topic, and simply because they do not have to agree.

It's an internet attiude, don't sweat this, K? They are just a bunch of drunks with keyboards, who knows what they will come up with next, eh?

That said, it's your engine. It will tell you what oil it wants. My engine whispers to me "clean," in a very seductive voice. "Clean" means frequent to me, every 2K, and whatever the house brand may be that day.

Buy what you want, no one here really cares, not even Ford. Just change it on a regular basis and record that as best you can.

"Dealership" oil changes are recorded in your L/M "OASIS" record, "Jiffy Lube" specials and quickies are not.

Keep a regular schedule, mileage or time, and document that. It may be necessary for the serious warranty stuff. Fair warning, non-OASIS stuff won't mean d**k when you're broke.

Just my .02c, K?
