View Full Version : Stripped lug nut?

What a horrible weekend and today only got worse.

I had to change my tire tonight and when I went to tighten the lug bults one was really hard to turn. I loosened the rest to make sure the wheel was on straight and the nut was still hard to turn. This has happened before on other nuts, but today after I turned it with heavy pressure it started moving pretty easily... too easily. Now it will not tighten or loosen, it's on the halfway mark.

I looked up to to remove this and it seems like the only way to get the nut off is to take a torch to the nut and kick the wheel until it pops off. Luckily this is the spare wheel, but is there another way to get this off or do I really need to take a torch to this?

The nut keeps spinning, there is nothing wrong with the socket getting a grip on it.

I have changed the part that the lug nut spins on to before, but on the other side of the car. I know the lug nut has to be off to do this.... so step on is getting the lug nut off.

Suggestions? Insults? Advice?

Thanks!

This happened to Ron Harper on his silver birch, pretty sure they had to burn it off. He texted me pics in progress, car on a lift, sparks flying and all.

You can get a nut splitter/bolt breaker. Should be about $12.00 I had to use one back in '89.

Can you take a small air cut off wheel and cut it thru the center, and if not all the way thru take a chisel and split it off ?

I can start with that.

Get a hacksaw and a good blade -may take you an hour or so but you will cut through the nut. Good luck.

If I did that I would cut the nut in half. Why would I wanna do that?

Remove the other nuts on the wheel, and apply pressure to the back of the wheel, pushing the wheel against the remaining, stripped nut. Now slowly turn the stripped nut. You should be able to get it to move a little bit. Reset the pressure on the back of the wheel, and turn the stripped nut some more. Be sure to not put any pressure on the nut towards the wheel or you will undo any progress you might have made.
Repeat the process, getting the nut to back off a little at a time. Might take a while, but should do the trick, without damaging the wheel.

Air gun high speed both ways, till the threads are mangled completely and it begs you to let it off the car... New stud and a regular nut (a hollow one) on backwards and torqued with gun to seat it. Done.

The nut is most likely bad so why not cut it off?

You really should loosen the other nuts the same amount! That way the centrifigul rotational forces are in juxtaposition with the alignment of the ferrite atoms in the car frame.... :D

Dom, do you wash your nuts? They'll get dry and you'll have trouble getting them off. You may want to lubricate them so you get them off easier.

Sounds like something a high school kid would do after a hot date, Marty... ;)

From what I can tell, His stud is OK, he's just got one bad Nut. If he fiddles with it long enough hell get it off

I am not touching the car anymore.

I've had enough. Time to step away for a few days... maybe longer.

Ok... Does that mean you're done touching your nuts too though?

One bad nut don't spoil the rest. Clean nuts are best. Dirty nuts are smelly and bad to have. Never know when someone wants to handle or smell your nuts.

I haven't touched them today so I will be extra cranky.

Thank you soooo much again.

This worked and eventually I pulled the wheel off hard enough to break it lose.

Thank you so much. This saved me a lot of trouble.

This thread just reminded me of something that happened when I was in high school.

(No, that's not the punchline...)

Apparently one student loosened the lugnuts on someone else's car during school, and when that person drove off after school was over...crash!

So, the next day, as I'm walking out of school to go to my car in the parking lot, there's the assisstant principal, female, telling everyone...."Make sure you check your nuts".

A for effort, D for execution....

She wasn't an attractive lady, so I deferred asking her to check mine for me...

Now, if it had been my English or Physics teacher out there instead....
