View Full Version : Having issues with my rear windows...need advice

On the way home from Carlisle, I started out driving with my windows down. After about an hour, it got too hot, so I closed them, but noticed my drivers’ side rear window wouldn’t completely close, leaving a 1 inch gap at the top. 30 minutes later, it started to sprinkle; luckily I was at the WV/VA state line and pulled into a rest area. I could tell the window was getting off the track, as the bottom left corner (looking at it from the outside) was getting stuck on the rubber molding instead of smoothly sliding into it. I tried to ‘push’ it back into the track, but no luck and didn’t want to break it, which would make the situation a lot worse. I happened to have a plastic bag filled with dirty cleaning towels in the backseat, so I jammed it into the gap as best I could to keep rain/water from getting in my car. It worked great; I drove through some very heavy downpours in SW VA and off/on rain until I got home and there were just a handful of drops on my seat and nothing else felt wet.
I took my car to the shop just down the road from me earlier this afternoon and there’s a hairline crack in the regulator assembly that is allowing the glass to ‘wobble’ when moving and coming off the track. I had a similar issue with my other rear window when I drove to GA a couple weeks ago; I couldn’t get it to move up at all, just down. Thinking it was an electric/switch issue, when I got to my brother’s house I dorked around with switches and it eventually closed; haven’t had any issues with it since then. Now I’m thinking it has the same problem, but not certain since I haven’t had any issues with it over the past couple of weeks.
Would appreciate any advice/info this great community has to offer….
TIA.

If the regulator has a crack in it you need to replace it. It will get worse.
Get regulators for both sides, we can replace them both.

Exactly.
That little white plastic will ruin everything. I recently did this.... twice.
If you are cheap you can always hold the window in track while it goes up and leave it closed.

Is it possible to buy just the regulator? I thought I read on here that you have to buy the regulator and a new track as they are sold together as one kit.

I've got the window closed now and will do my best to remember not to open it until I get it fixed...already forgot once since I had it at the shop...:o

You can always disconnect the motor.

I bring nothing to the table.

You have to buy the whole assembly, track and regulator. Might want to consider getting the motors and change everything at once.

Wha...just because you posted a how-to thread (on something that already had a how-to thread), everyone else has to?
How about I come to your house and make a how-to thread on kicking your a$$....

Mayhaps I will; I don't have anything planned yet for the weekend(s) in July and August I won't have my kids. I don't like being at home on the weekends I don't get to see them. Perhaps we can get a few others in your area to join in and make it a mini-meat....;)

So, I don't know what parts/part numbers I should be looking for (other than right rear/left rear). I checked out the Rock Auto website and pulled up the following parts list. Is this where I should be looking? If so, which brand should I go with?

I would spend the extra $15.00ea. and get them from FORD for $77.00. I always try to keep the small stuff MotorCraft OEM.... That's just my .02 cents...

Be very careful when drilling out the window. Keep it straight when drilling or the window will shatter.

No need to drill anything. If there are rivets they are easy to remove.

I just replaced the driver's window lift motor. Before I started, I had new regulators with and without motor. Both were Dorman from local Aito Zone and Carquest. $40'00 and $101 respectively. Did not need either, as it was the motor. Just adding my 2 cents worth.

The mechanic at the shop showed me the hairline crack in the regulator assembly and since I had a similar problem with my other window, I think it would be prudent to just go ahead and replace everything at once on both windows. Still unsure of what I need to get...I think no one is looking at post #15...seems the last post on every page gets overlooked.

Yep...would've been a shame for you to have 2 and I not have one at all...it almost happened...good thing I jumped on it right away.
For buying a car off the internet without actually looking at it or taking a test drive, I definitely hit the jackpot. Below is a list of what I've had to get fixed:
--Oil filter gasket
--BCM
--Chaffed wire
I am knocking on wood as I type this, of course. I have spent money on other stuff, but that stuff falls under routine maintenance, normal wear n tear, and mods, not because something was broke.

Not sure what you mean there Kyle...^^^can mean a lot of things...but rather think you mean more of a joke and rather than something harsh..what I was referring too was a joke like I was meaning ...apparently you may not have read it that way---that's the problem with one way media......it happens.........not a big deal...
I agree.........a good buy...told you before in person...was having fun with you cause of our unique situation...........on that car buy..........no need to justify anything...you are cool man......

Precisely why you need to get out more often...it's the only way we can understand each other. ;) I took your comment as a joke and meant mine to be the same...was just stating how lucky I was to get 'er before you did and how the luck has continued.
You're correct...one way media can get a couple of sarcastic SOBs like us into hot water real quick...which is why we need to get together and catch up sometime soon. I'll be coming through Charlotte at the end of the month...maybe then?

Don't know much about the TYC parts. Might want to check the internet to see if anyone has had any issues with them.
As for Dorman, I wouldn't trust any of their parts except the Help Me parts.
Check eBay.
