My setup currently is and eaton swap @~10lbs of boost, 4.10's, dleted rear cats, 4" non resonated tips, 39# injectors, and a tune from martyo giving me a nice 428hp/378tq combo.

I have no fuel mods, exhaust(besides above), or internal engine mods

Would it be possible fo rme to get to 500hp on the stock block, and if so what would i need to get there??? I know headers would be about 40-50 hp but i would still need about another 25-30 hp to break 500.

So besides headers what would be next??

I don't think 500rwhp on a totally stock block and internals is recommended. I've alwasy read here that 450 rwhp is the higher end one should go with stock engine. I'm sure the members here with more hp will let you know what they have done to get 500+

Most members here who are running 500+ rwhp have swapped engines to say a Terminator or Aluminator block. I believe the stock block itself can handle the power but the rods and such can not.

It's not just the engine. I have been running ~540RWHP for 70K miles. It is only as strong as the weakest link.

^^^^^^^ What they said.

I'm currently at 455 rwhp, Eaton swap running 11 lbs boost and a full SW exhaust, tuned by Mo's; and that's as far as I want to go on the stock internals.

Getting to 450 is relatively cheap, beyond that, cost starts rising expotentially.

Figure accordingly: Eaton swap = approx. $4,500 = around 420 -435 hp

Headers, full exhaust and dyno tune = (additional) approx. $3,000 - $3,500 to pick up an additional 25 - 40 hp [net total = 450 - 460-ish].

Beyond that:

(Minimum) Forged, balanced internals, upgraded fuel system, tranny mods to handle the increased power,
(Ideal) Built Corba, MMR or Aluminator long block, plus trans work

Range: figure minimum $4,000, up to ???? to get past 460-ish, safely (i.e. no BOOM!). I'd hazard a guess that most of the 500+ guys have $15k+ invested in their motors/drivetrain, I know there are a couple that are easily North of $20K.

So exhaust upgrades would be ok since technically I'm not adding internal stress just making the engine flow better making it more efficient

Well since I would still be at 10#s, with the headers I'll be making more power with the same amount of boost, more output with same input..........maybe??

Your engine is developing more HP not your exhaust.

+1

Just because you are reducing back-pressure doesn't mean your engine is less stressed, or at least not in every way.

Creating like 450lbs-ft of rotational force is bad enough, but when you're spinning it faster and faster, you're creating a LOT of stress on your conrods and crankshaft.

That being said, I'd personally focus on creating more torque rather than trying to spin the engine higher to reach a HP number.

Put longtubes on the car and then pulley it to run like 12-13 lbs of boost instead of 10.

Subsequently though, +1 to what people are saying about the engine not having a long life at that point...

jwibbity
06-29-2013, 09:31 PM
So best bet would only upgrade to headers, but anything beyond that would require internal upgrades along with accompanying systems(fuel, and junk)

Yea this is why I have switched gears from saving for a Eaton or vortec to saving for that new 5.0 Aluminator. Maybe some cams and headers before she goes in and then later on down the line after I upgrade things like the Trans and suspension then I'll throw some boost on top of it....I should be close to 600 with a setup like that

I don't have any more than what the picture shows. Was Mo,s speed shop dyno day. Car is my daily driver with 13000 miles on plugs and belt(6rib) that slips at rpm, and through the stock factory exhaust. I had nothing to do with dyno settings. Payed my money and let it roll!

Thanks, I had the car tuned when I installed the 324 and Lysholm blower, it made 516/557. That was on a Dynopak dyno, and on race fuel. My intentions on the methanol was to get back on 93 pump gas, I had been blending. In short, I don't have good data to say what the gain if any was, but I am more comfortable the numbers are being made on a tune I am a little more comfortable with
