After 2 1/2 years of collecting parts, I have finally started to dig into it. Bought most of the parts new. Still waiting on some of them to come in, but am well supplied to start the process. I plan on taking my time to learn as I go and make it as clean as possible.

So far, I've got the car up on stands, front wheels removed, battery out and heat exchanger installed.

That's it for now!

UPDATE:

Got some tear down done today, using the trilogy manual as my guide. I've taken detailed pics along the way of what the manual says to do. Thought it would be good to supplement the manual with some real life pics of the car. Plus i can keep track of everything. I just posted on my supermotors acct. if anyone is interested in sifting through all of them, there's already over 100 pics. Good reference material.

Anyways, thought I would share some highlights with y'all:

Here's the lower bracket for the heat exchanger:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987269/fullsize/16-heat-exchanger-lower-bracket.jpg

Started today draining coolant:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987275/fullsize/19-draining.jpg

Started labeling stuff I took apart:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987303/fullsize/30-start-lables.jpg

Make sure to unhook the radiator hose from the fan assembly before trying to lift the fan out:

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987308/fullsize/35-unhooked.jpg

Also the trans cooler lines:

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987311/fullsize/38-transmission-cooler-line-mounts-on-fan.jpg

Still letting the lower connection of the EGR tube soak with WD40:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987349/fullsize/76-waiting-on-lower-egr-tube-to-soak-in-wd40.jpg

Think I'm gonna get a catch can:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987356/fullsize/83-underside-of-plenum.jpg

Coolant crossover tube was nasty! Driver's side popped out pretty easily, but the passenger side was pretty stuck. Night and day between sides:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987369/fullsize/96-big-difference-between-sides.jpg

Up to the point of removing the fuel rail, injectors and stock lower intake. Lotsa labels and getting more room to work!

Thanks everyone!

Haven't ever dug this much into a car before, but it's fun!
Really opens your eyes to many things.

Here's some more pics, only a couple more steps to the tear down.

Unbolted and removed the fuel rail and injectors.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987456/fullsize/115-fuel-rail-unbolted.jpg

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987458/fullsize/117-fuel-rail-out.jpg

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987459/fullsize/118-fuel-rail.jpg

Opened up the wiper cowl and found a little surprise at least it was all dry!
Still have to remove the rest of it.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987457/fullsize/116-wiper-cowl-suprise.jpg

Got the lower intake out, thought it would've been more dirty.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987460/fullsize/119-lower-intake-out.jpg

Removed gaskets, vacuumed and taped it up:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987461/fullsize/120-taped-up.jpg

Idler pulley and knock sensors removed:
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987463/fullsize/122-flat-idler-pulley-removed.jpg

And finally, the lower half of the EGR...Still stuck and I don't wanna break anything.
Have sprayed it multiple times with WD40 and PB Blaster, letting it soak for a while and tried turning with a cresent wrench but it still won't budge....Any suggestions?

Got the EGR tube off the header. Propane will work , just have to be patient.

Used this propane to heat up the nut red hot and then wrenched it. It was still hard to turn but it did start turning a little (1/2 turn). Then let it cool off a little and sprayed it with PB blaster again. 20 minutes later it unthreaded the rest of the way rather easily.

Do you have the eaton swap stuff already or started? however, it does make sense to go talk to a shop before gathering parts..install price in midwest is around $750 -$1000 i believe plus dyno tune cost.

After a few set backs (life) and taking time to wipe down the motor and individual components under the hood, I'm slowly continuing in my free time.

I found the compressor for the air suspension is looking rather rusted. It has been really noisy when it kicks on and was thinking about replacing it while I'm in here.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/987813/fullsize/134-old-air-ride-compressor.jpg

Also got the new spark plugs (Motorcraft SP-505) gapped at .032 and installed.

Not sure if you're planning on keeping your egr or not but I got in trouble test fitting things individually but not all together. So my cooling mod didn't interfere with the intake manifold and my modified egr tube didn't interfere with the cooling mod. But when I put everything back together I ran into some trouble with the fuel rails. Just some food for thought.

Looks good. Bringing back memories.

Was muslemerc's cooling mod easy to do it you'r self ?

It's not hard if you take your time and understand all the steps thoroughly, just have to be very careful.

Speaking of which, If you use the OEM Cobra cooling tube (under the lower intake) with the cooling mod, you have to modify the mounting bracket of the tube like so to clear the driver's side fitting:

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/989861/fullsize/171-coolant-return-tube-mod.jpg

Should've left the corner of the cut section rounded to add strength, but I think it will do.

FINALLY FINISHED! (just about)

Only have a few small things to button up, but it's there. Gonna pickup a tune from Lidio on Saturday and hopefully fire it up!

Because the lake is warm(relatively speaking) and the cold air blowing across it picks up the moisture and freezes it to snow and drops it after it hits landfall. It's only about a 10-25 mile inland area that gets it dependent on which way the wind is blowing..E, SE, S etc. It can snow like mofo in the snow belt and then a mere 20 min away..nothing

Do you have to have a tune just to start it? I have to get my car to Mr. Norm's in Rockford after I install mine. I figured either 1. Don't get on it until after the tune, or 2. Leave the supercharger belt off during the trip. I don't know the answer.

i get that, my point is what do i/we/you care that it is lake effect. the way the weathermen say it is like it doesn't count. it's still snow, it still needs to be plowed, shoveled, and driven in is all. did i mention i only like snow on xmas day:lol:

You will need a tune. Different injectors, MAF, S/C, etc...

Yes sir I did, thank you for being so helpful!

[QUOTE]Do you have to have a tune just to start it?I was told with the MAF( SCT BA2600) and injector (Siemens Deka 60/lb.) combo I'm using, it would probably run "OK" to get to the dyno, but I'm not gonna chance it! Lidio's shop is just 10 miles up the road from me. I currently have a custom dyno tune from the SW headers and full exhaust.

Ha! I couldn't even try to give you a number of hours. I probably spent too much time on it but I wanted to learn as I went. Never dug this much into an engine before...It was a learning experience on many levels. If I was working on it everyday it would've probably taken only two to three months instead of the four that it has.

I gotcha. As a person who has never been into engines much what would you say the toughest part of this swap was for YOU? BTW, you should be proud of yourself it looks like it belongs there.

The Gortch brackets are the hardest part to find for this project ?,,,If someone loaned you the parts, you could have them replicated within a week and have the specs on hand for future bracket purchases or shares of info on this site.
