View Full Version : Can't remove harmonic balancer...

I run a nice March Performance 1158 fluid filled SFI underdrive dampener, (12 hp gain roughly) I had my mechanic install it.
I tried a couple of universal harmonic balancer pullers but they were too small. The below puller wont fit my junk.

Edit: the bolts that come with harmonic dampener removal tool do thread perfectly in to March unit (holes on outer edge in above pic)
Ducks foot (see below pic) is the same crappy universal part that comes with everyone's harmonic balancer removal tool. Will not fit above pic.

I thought I could use a 3 jaw style but I didn't want to hurt the harmonic dampener itself, the damper is very close to the front cover so I can't get the jaws to slide behind the unit either, I have to put it on the belt area of the balancer lip. See above picture.
Was going to do new tensioners and guides, but can't get it off. Had to put it back together. So much for a 2 hour job lol.
:help:
Post me a link if you know what to get. Thanks

Try a steering-wheel puller...duck's-foot may be bigger?

Have you contacted March or checked their website?

I had to grind the slots on my duck foot to get all 3 bolts in with my OE dampner. Less than 1mm per slot was needed on mine as I could get the 2 side bolts but not the center bolt.

usually those are 2 bolts only, so no go. Thanks for suggestion

Yep, I called today, sent and email - crickets chirping. Need to call back.

I think I could grind the ends right out and it'd be still to short.
Thanks anyway guys. I'm hoping March will have news...

Thanks, nice offer. Appreciate it.
I found out that the march 1158 damper has a 4.25" BCD. (bolt circle diameter) The large harmonic damper kit's have a 4 5/8" maximum size, so I just got to plunk down $70 to buy a kit from Jegs, that has the large discus style plate...

Nice that AutoZone or Advance Auto or Pep Boys don't have anything of this caliber! Even the one they rent is the cheap small style.

Jegs website says it won't fit the Mach 1. Isn't that the same 4.6 4V we have? I've been thinking about doing this same thing is why I'm asking...

It does fit the Mach1, info on their site is wrong. Also fits crown vics too.

I think this is the best underdrive, SFI, 12hp, Fluid Filled, controls vibration at all RPM...
Only downside is you need a puller kit with a big plate to remove it! Replace your timing chain tensioners and guides before you install it..
You'll also need a 91" Dayco belt if you change only the Damper.

I'm receiving a vibration when the RPM drops after accelerating while the car is in park. So I'm guessing it could be the balancer. Will this also work with the Steeda under drive pulley kit?

Yes it will work although you may need a different length belt.
