All,

For good measure, and lack of trust in my original fuel pump, I elected to drop in a new Ford stock fuel pump. I got the Ford part cheap, and figure it'd be a pretty easy swap since the tank doesn't have to come out. I followed the basic steps for the GT40 pump install thread found on these forums, but found the wiring to be kind of a pain. Part may have been I decided to do it tonight after a long workday, shoulda had a beer instead. :)

A few ?s

1.) I disconnected the fuel pump power connector that is on top of the large subrame assembly above the rear axle. However, it doesn't appear with everything in place that the connector can pass through between that steel bracketry above the rear axle and the tank and body. Any tricks?

2.) The Fuel level sender snakes around and hooks up above the tank. I can see it from the passenger rear wheel well, but can't really reach my hand in to disconnect it. Any tricks?

3.) Can I leave the wires connected to remove the fuel pump assembly? Right now I can't get enough slack on the fuel sender wire. It appears to have a wire tie/clip about 8 inches up the line from the hat portion, and I couldn't see exactly how it was connected. I didn't want to break it.

So I did disconnect the passenger exhaust hanger, and can get the fuel pump assembly to clear it, just don'th ave enough slack in the wiring to manuever it clear from the tank. (I did disconnect the fuel line though)

Need a few tips on doing this. i'd still ike to swap the pump for a fresh one so I feel more comfortable on future long drives. If I drive it to work, that 55 miles each way and I leave early...don't wanna stop traffic for the wrong reasons, ya know? ;)

Thx!

Cut the tape at the hat side of the wire loom so the fuel sending wire can stay up high while the pump wires can come down. Might also have to cut the zip tie that is up there. You shouldn't have to unplug the harness, but maybe you do. You definatly don't have to unplug the sender, I never have anyway.

I had problems with slack in the wires too. I wound up cutting them to get the pump off, and taped them up really well later on. MAKE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!!!

Thanks all, got it out and new pump installed. I was able to get enough wire slack to remove it - have to turn it just the right way but it'll come.

Runnin well so far, thx again!
