View Full Version : A/c compressor turns on late

Hello all,
I'm having an issue with my a/c. When I first turn the car on and a/c the compressor doesn't kick in.

If I let it idle for ten minutes in park the compressor begins working and a/c blows cold air and usually works for most of the day.

If I just get in it and drive, the compressor doesn't seem to ever turn on until I slow down to pull into the parking lot of my destination but only after about 30 mins of driving. Does the same thing if I drive for 2 hours. Doesn't turn on until I arrive.

I replaced the low pressure switch today hoping that would fix it, no such luck. I hooked up to my gauges 2 weeks ago with the compressor on and everything looked fine.

Maybe the high pressure switch next to the exhaust manifold is bad??

Thanks for any help.

Try switching relay # 204 (A/C Clutch) in the Power Distribution Box under the hood behind the battery with relay #206 (Fog Lamp). If the A/C starts working then replace the #204 relay.

After alot of use the relay sometimes get "slow" or the contacts don't work properly.

If Jim's suggestion doesn't work, I would also just check the high and low pressure sides.

Remember these cars are 10 years old now and the loss of freon is not uncommon.

Thanks fbm! Your suggestion worked!

I had to swap #204 with #207 which is the fog lamp relay. #206 is empty.

Thanks for the fast responses everyone!

I don't always post on mm.net....
... But when I do I get valuable help.

Happy 4th everyone!
