My car is a garage queen and gets driven about 2K miles a year, mostly easy driving. My question is, I have a Goodyear F1 GS D3 on there now and need new tires but they dont make em anymore. I found New Old stock tires that were kept in a climate controlled warehouse but manufactured in 05.

Any thoughts on whether this is a good idea?

Most reputable shops will refuse to install them if they're that old.

Big +1.

Go with Nittos and never look back.

I wouldn't buy old NOS tires..Even the owner's manual in today's cars say to replace tires at like 6 years regardless of miles. If you like the factory staggered sizes that came original there are better choices than BFG..Cooper Zeon RS3A and Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval or something close to that name and Nitto Motivo..If you want to go different sizes than most go with NItto 555

tirerack.com has the stock set front and rears for 800 with a $50 rebate
I just purchased 2 rears

I'd say your fine as long as their less than 10 years old.

What I've learned is you dont buy tires more than 4 years old. Most of them will start cracking around the 6 year mark. The Nitto 555's last a long time but have a stiff ride . The Cooper Zeon RS3A tires I have on the front of my marauder and they ride nice & have a thick thread wear. Pierrie from Canada & Bob from mass have them on all 4's and love them. They ride nice and handle good too.

Have them on all 4's here also for about 6 months now. No complaints.

I did three hours of research and most everyone above is correct. No matter how rubber is stored (except perhaps without 02, and gravity, or rays from sun)... Rubber ages.

Almost all car manufacturers are holding the line at 6years, and tire manufacturers at 8years as the replacement time, regardless of mounting or any usage at all.

Further, many states (don't know if it I'd federal) mandate that the AGE OF THE TIRE/BORN DATE ARE LISTED OPENLY ON THE TIRE AND THE RECIEPT WHEN PURCHASED (previous jul
In dates were only on inside of tire... And unknown to the general public).

BUY BRAND NEW. CHECK DATES ON TIRES/ASK BEFORE YOU PAY. Some tires are already years old before you mount them.

ALL ABOVE IMHO, and straight from my research data set. No vested interest in any way.

Good decision... I wouldn't buy them either.

I certainly wouldn't buy them at that age as new. Now if they were 80% off and I had a coupon and I wasn't using the car as a daily driver.......na I still wouldn't buy them for a car, maybe a hay wagon.

manufacture dates have been posted on the outside of the tire for many years.

the DOT number, which is usually on both sides, but the complete number is usually only on one side, the last 4 numbers indicate the week of production. IE 4909 would be the 49th week of 2009.

I am on my 4th or 5th set of OEM rear BFGs. It was just a good price. Now that I am once again in need I will go with either the Cooper rs3-a or nitto motive.
