View Full Version : recommend me a tranny cooler please!

I think its time for me to put in a tranny cooler, ive been reading temps around 190 in 85degree weather with normal highway driving. ive tried doing a tranny flush, and it didn't help. before someone says "that's not right", i want to say that when i first got the car, i jacked it up(for an oil change) on the metal piece that runs under the radiator(i don't know what its called), and i bent it up and it put a bend in my radiator and all, wedged the fan to where it wouldn't turn.....luckily it didn't crack my radiator or anything else, but i assume it may have kinked a metal tube or a few(between the fins), the same goes for the trans cooler which i believe is mounted there too. i know....im dumb:lol:. im thinking of getting another trans cooler, but im not sure which one to get, nor what size hoses i need. the way to mount this is to take off the right rubber line(looking down from the motor), run it to the aftermarket cooler, than run the line from the aftermarket cooler back to where i started...the right metal line. <is my assumption correct? thank you guys for the help!

The stacked plate type are the most efficient and buy the biggest one you can afford or fit.

I just read your entire post. I would completely bypass the factory cooler. I just had to replace my trans cooler lines two weeks ago. I would highly recommend -6 AN steel braided lines. There are way too many things that could cut rubber lines. I would mount the cooler in front of the radiator, behind the grille.

I mounted my aftermarket cooler in series wit the factory cooler. From the tranny, through the factory cooler, through the aftermarket cooler, back to the tranny.
Best advise above... Get the biggest cooler that will fit.

so the results are in, these results are from today, with 97-100*F on outside temperature gauge.
bypassing the oem cooler: average of ~195, at one point It hit 199:eek:, it hit 199 while driving at around 50mph, and stayed at 197 until I got home.
running in series AFTER the oem cooler: average of ~180, hit 179 while driving around 60mph on the highway, heading back home it reached 184 in between red lights that were a few miles away from each other, but would cool down to ~178 once stopped. at one point I gunned it from about 40mph to 80-90mph, temp went to 188, but went back down to 183 in about a mile and a half.
now for the install: PITA in 100* weather.....I started to install it yesterday after work at 3pm, it came with 4 feet of 11/32ID tranny hose, which is slightly larger than the stock hose on the car, I have it mounted in front of the a/c radiator thing, in front of everything(im terrible with correct names of parts), passenger side, the hose outlets pointing down. where the outlets are, I used the push pin zip tie things and ran the pins through the a/c radiator, but for the top mounting holes for the cooler, I couldn't get the pins to run through the 3 sets of radiator fins(a/c radiator, tranny and power steering cooler, and radiator), so I zip tied to the bottom of the 3 bars that run across right behind the front bumper(again, I don't know what these are called). I drilled 4 holes into my air damn, and ran the hoses through it, concealing the lines, and holds them up from hitting road debris somewhat.
the problem!: they give you 4 feet of hose, to connect the outlet to the inlet on the tranny, I used about 2 feet, but to connect the inlet to the outlet side of the oem cooler, you'll need about 3 feet. no FLAPS has this size in stock, plus it would be a PITA to try and run a new hose onto the OEM cooler and tighten on a hose clamp.
the fix!: I went to colliflower(a place that specializes in making custom hydraulic hose[same place I used to get a push fitting coupling to reattach the cut air line going to the air suspension]) and picked up a 5/16" barbed hose coupling, I connected the original hose to the new hose with this, and used hose clamps to hold on the hose to the fitting which probably doesn't even need it. all is well, and I can sleep tonight.
if someone cannot find a place like colliflower in their area, heres a link to McMaster-Carr with barbed hose fittings,
http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-barbed-tube-fittings/=nok2ub
you'll need the: Type 316L Stainless Steel Single-Barbed Tube Fittings: 5/16" size.

this is what I use and my temps in a 100 degree stable around 150 to 165 at the most never seen it run higher than that even when building BOOST!

The OEM cooler is more than adequate.
To reduce coolant temps I removed the OEM trans cooler, cut off the P/S cooler, mounted it on the sway bar and installed a 12"X12" trans cooler behind the grill.
My trans temps range from 140*-220*. I have 70K miles, 70+ 11 second passes and 540RWHP w/ a 3,500 stall.
Make sure you do not increase coolant temps in your quest for lower trans temps.

Mine is hooked up in series with the OEM cooler. Hot as hell out and still can't get it to go past 150 by much. Maybe 160 tops. :banana2:
Twice the capacity of the one you chose Whitey may have been worth the extra coin.....I know $145 is considerably more.

Ive always thought that having your fluid too cold could be detrimental also though....is that true?

A good normal operating temp for our transmission is 140-150 degrees. Trans temps will rise faster with the converter unlocked. Cruising around town will yield higher trans temps than cruisng around on the highway going around the speed limit.
All automatic cars that have a transmission cooler from factory will have a thermo by-pass (thermostat for the transmission). I don't remember if ours is built-in to the factory cooler or is placed in-line before the factory cooler. Once the trans fluid has reached operating temp it opens and allows the fluid to cycle and regulate.

I wouldn't recommend eliminating the OEM trans cooler.
As fastblackmerc said: Run your new/add-on trans cooler in series with your existing OEM cooler.
Your factory cooler has the radiator fan behind it and gets cooled even when you are in stop&go traffic. IIRC: It also has a built in thermostat for cold weather.
Most aftermarket coolers do not have a fan, and depending on where you mount it, may not get good airflow at low speeds.
I added a B&M trans cooler which has it's own fan in series with the OEM trans cooler when I put my higher stall convertor in.
My trans temps NEVER get above 180 degrees regardless of how hard I run the car.

My Tru-Cool unit doesn't have a fan and with my 3500 stall I have never seen the trans get higher than 180 either. Even in summer stop and go traffic with the AC on.

Interesting thread, i'm planing in future to add a extra tranny oil cooler to work in conjunction with the existing one due to the higher temperatures here in P.R. and the heavy duty use of my Panther DD I think it will help a lot.

Any install photos? Were you able to use the mounting brackets, or did you have to resort to those plastic pins pushed through the radiator?

Thanks for the pics. I'll be towing a 1500lb trailer for about 1500 miles this summer, so figure I better make sure to cool my transmission well.
I plan to install a supercharged engine in the future. I don't suppose there is any way I can anticipate mounting of the intercooler heat exchanger so as to not revisit the trans cooler mounting?
