Got an extra cover, had it sandblasted and put a few coats of eastwood Alumaseal on it. Did install a new crank seal on it too.

Guides and tensioners WERE NOT WORN! WTF, So I didn't bother replacing them.

100,000 Miles. I do change the oil a lot, probably 20 times in the last 50,000 miles.

Didn't get a pic of the new cover on but it looks good. Took me 8 hours - 4 on Sat, 4 on Sunday.

Removed PS pump to get to bolt behind it. 90 ft/pounds on my $24 ARP Crank bolt.

Did NOT drop any coolant. Used Blackend300a's tip of cutting with a hacksaw the right topmost stud off the bolt, loosened it (left it in as it's right infront of coolant hose) and pulled cover with bolt still loose in the hole.

This was a tough job (as always) Took my time and cleaned all pulleys, bolts etc.

So why did you take it apart in the first place...just to check everything or was there an issue with the original cover?

Was going to do prevent maint and replace the: tensioners, and guides!

They didn't need it. Seems to be hit and miss - all over the place - some have no issues others are clanking around.. RacerX had 140K on his and they were 60% left I think he said. Others have 80K and metal was wearing. My last car a 2002 P71, the chains had eaten their way into the tensioners themselves at 100K... I wish I would have used a borescope deal to look at them first. I do have a nice clean beautiful front cover - with new gaskets and seals! All my fingernails have black crap under them too.:D

Doh!

Doh! I am thinking about doing the same thing as I have a little start up noise, not sure if its the guides/tensioners. I didn't realize you could leave the cam covers on ! makes the job easier:banana:

Still it's a tough job, Loosen all cam cover bolts, remove cam covers, pull coils up a bit. Don't lift covers too high (more than 1") Carefull pulling cover back as the top of timing cover has dabs of factory RTV that will stick to the cam cover gaskets, pull to hard to quickly and you can pull the cam cover gaskets out - and you don't want to do that.

Good luck!

Those are some nice upgrades, 42lbs is kind of big -- are you spaying or boosted? Can you post a link for the tensioner type you speak of? Nice mod list you got going. PM me what you Dyno at!

Hee-hee, re: back. Surprisingly ok! I drove my car up on ramps! So everything was closer to me. Higher off the ground. Plus ramps are very safe -- it's almost impossible to knock it off ramps no matter how much you torque on anything. r

Just take your time -- I did it in two days. I took my time, I like the large crank dampener/installer I got from Jegs, a joy to use, it make R&Ring my March 1158 SFI Fluid filled damper (4.25" Bolt Circle) super easy. I have a radio in my garage and jam to classic rock on the radio too - that helps a ton. :beatnik:

I was never a pro wrench like you are. I've done headers, installed my trans myself etc, I just like doing the work myself then I know it's done right! good luck. PM me if you have any questions and I'll do my best to help you or anyone doing this job.

Once my stock 200k+ mi motor gets pulled, I'm going to put it on a stand and take it apart piece by piece while documenting everything.

Not a good pic to see wear but I assure you it was next to perfect at 92,000. I still went ahead with the Ford Racing kit, let me tell you when they say complete, they mean COMPLETE! Even new bolts..
