I cant take it anymore, I have been dreaming of nitrous for about 2 or so years now, and im pretty sure im going to finally get a system. the system im looking at is the zex 82023, 8 cyl. universal wet kit. it will be self installed(if I feel im not capable, chris/blown3.8 can hopefully fit me in his schedule:) ). before I pull the trigger, I have a few questions about this all.
first, im thinking of running at most a 75 shot, I have 148K on my car as it stands, everything runs purrfect. Ive heard a 100 shot is safe to go with, but im not willing to push my luck. sound alright?
second, does anybody know how much timing the zack tune 2.0 advances from the stock timing? I plan on retarding timing 2 degrees from stock calibration, and Im not sure how much to retard his tune.
third, recommend me some spark plugs. I currently run autolite ap 104, I want/need to run plugs 2 stages cooler, just to be on the safe side.
forth, the zex control module/solenoids need a 38 psi fuel pressure to work, I believe ive read somewhere that our cars are right at 38psi, is this correct? I will test fuel pressure before I install the system, but need to know if I should get a boost-a-pump installed.
any help is appreciated, and pictures of set-ups will also help with where to mount things and give ideas on how to run/mount the lines.
any other things I should put in my notes?
thanks--whitey

Stock block ? You want to do the kit on? And chris blown did some work on my car real stand up guy.

stock block. I talked to chris about it at mv9 at the car show, at that time I had 119K on it and he said I should be good with a 100 shot. I have a jlt, steeda's, j-mod, sct xcal2 zack 2.0 tune, removed 2nd set of cats.

Go get a Ford GT or Focus fuel pump. You dont want to run out of fuel :)
Go have some Marauder Fun!

Stock pump will hold a 75 shot with no problems.

Go for it.
I've heard the NX kits are true hp and are less problematic then zex. But either way. Have fun and be safe. I'll be eyeing this as to I wouldn't mind a 75-100shot
Whitey,
Go with the 100 shot ZEX wet system. Anything lower is a little disappointing.
Use copper core plugs, not platinum. one range colder is OK.
Three degree's retard from optimum timing is good.
Make sure fittings don't leak (be sensitive to bottle pressure).
Keep bottle full, have a purge system to check to see if nitrous is present and firing
Index your nozzles so the gas cutout is pointing to the Throttle Body.
Position the nozzles 12-18 inches from the throttle body.
"toomanyfords", a member on this site, made a super metal mounting plate for the purple box, he may still have the plans, (solid mounting not screwed into the plastic fender well), send him a PM.
I recommend the traction window box set to whatever rpm you car makes when it hooks up without nitrous. That is, you have 100% traction at 3000 RPM from idle at a standing start, then set the box to fire at 3K RPM.
Be aware that the ZEX computer, purple box, can fail either on the fuel or nitrous side and can have a bad effect. So if the motor doesn't run right with nitrous on, immediately turn off the system and determine cause.
I used my 100 shot for some years on the strip, didn't use it on the street.
Will put you in the 13's with not other mods.
Good luck.
Regards,
Pat

Get a tune for it. LowbuckMM picked up like 93RWHP and 187RWTQ IIRC! With just a 100 shot!! He did this over three years ago and races it on the stock block running I believe 12.4's now...

Whitey, what is your goal with the nitrous?

I could be going out on a limb here, but I'm gonna say to go fast and have fun... ;) -----------> :D

How will the car run OFF the nitrous being that timing will be pulled?

Timing should only pull under NOS shot & WOT to prevent BOOM!

get a flip chip installed and you can change programs on the fly with a flip of a switch for the NOS, I think Lidio ran his Mm back in the day the same way, seemed to work killer........
If I remeber he ran a trilogy with a 100 shot on a stock block and internals, ran 11.4's,not bad.........

I have the Zex dry kit with 150 shot. My first time was only 100 on the stock bottom end. The flip chip is the way to go, I have one from Lidio. With out the flip chip you will have to drive on the nitrous tune and it will be real slow and use more gas. Get a fuel pump to be safe.

Just so im understanding, can't i just retard the timing on the zack tune? Lets say his tune advances timing 4 degrees, would i reatard his tune 6 degrees, to retard 2 degrees from stock setting? Or would retard just 2 degrees from Zack's tune, leaving me at a 2 degree advance timing? Would the car really run like crap with timing retarded just 2 degrees?

Your in Maryland so get ahold of blown 3.8 and work with Chris on how to set this up.
I would not go around messing with the timing on tunes unless I understood exactly what is going on with my motor. Any type of lean condition and you are probably buying a new shortblock!
Our motors are very susceptable to detonation and it does not take much to kill one -:)
Good Luck

+1.
Whitey, especially with it being your daily you will want the tune to be spot on for it plus you get more out of it with it being tuned properly for it.

Definitely going to talk to Chris on Saturday. I personally want to install the system just so i know what to do incase something went wrong/malfunctioned/trouble shooting , but for the tuning part, i should leave that for the experts.

A Correctly installed nitrous system to be reliable is honestly about the cost of a blower.
I had about 2k into my stang's nitrous system between the flip chip, warmers, gauges, purges, remote bottle opener, various jets, ect.... And in the end with all the refils I did. I could have bought a blower the first time. I bracket raced and street raced so I needed it to be available when I wanted and be consistent.
I wouldn't run nitrous on an OBD-II car unless it had a specific tune for the nitrous. So basically a street and nitrous. Only crappy thing is you'll need to flash the ECU before hitting the bottle. So that limits you to track use. You won't be able to catch a light next to a car and be ready to throw down.

Vortech: i dont agree with the cost factor, im not sure how much a tune will run me, but the zex kit cost ~$600. Im not getting too fancy with it, but im sure if i did , i would spend well over a grand. Not being able to throw down at a light is a little dissapointing, but maybe its best ill be limited to having to run the nos specific tune...nobody wants a speeding ticket.

You can disagree all you want. It's what the cost of everything was.
Cheap,
reliable,
fast. Pick two.
I was looking into a nitrous regulator for ultimate consistency but decided I had had enough and threw a blower on.
If you are looking for the occasional blast and consistency isn't a priority then just throw a kit on.
