Nahhh....you whine too much.
BTW: Have you (or someone else) figured out what is wrong with your S/C Cobra engine yet?
Or have you found some suckers....errrr....I mean....'sponsors' to help you buy another engine??
I found someone willing to tear it apart this week, but I don't see the point. I no longer want to deal with high maintenance for a Street Machine.
The only way I found to acquire another engine is with help from another person on buying that burnt car in N.C. I grab what I want, they grab what they want and we are both happy. Done with my money.

Zack found me an engine and the owner of the burnt car wanted too much money.
I will be making a 90 mile drive to pick it up what's close to me. Yes I will inspect it by turning it over, checking the oil and plugs.
Anything I am missing?

Yes go for it.
Owner wanted too much. Maybe you can talk him down to your benefit.
Two others wanted parts, I will PM their names. Maybe you can all work something out together.

I agree with 1 Bad Merc.

We picked up another engine last night.
Big thanks to LOWBUCKMM for riding along and helping with load in/inspection.
I am scared to death driving Beckys Mountaineer with the engine in the back. I cannot remove it because I have no engine lift and Zack simply does not have the ability to take it in right now. I might take the train around town. I drive faster with a 4 ton trailer behind me.

How do you know the sludge wasn't there in the cobra engine when you bought it? Did anyone ever remove the cam covers before installing the thing in your Marauder?
Just because it was a Cobra engine doesn't mean the original owner took care of the thing.

08-12-2013, 12:30 PM
I just got an email from Zack, my forth engine is in and this is the worst engine swap he has ever done. It's running, but still needs a few little things. I should be picking it up soon, but I need to sell the blower to cover him.
No word yet on what failed, but it sounds like the oil pump. I bought the oil pump new a year and a half ago. If it's still under warranty, I will tell them their failing product cost me an engine and you owe me $$$$. I am sure they will laugh and if I make a few calls this will have to go to court and they have better lawyers.

Zack advised me to get some oil pump gears from a guy named Roy on the Mach1 forum after I told him I had a FRPP Cobra oil pump for my new engine. Contacted the guy and he won't have the time to make new gears for a while.
Glad to hear you got another engine. Do you have an NA tune for your car?

Because Dom Car.
Now, from my understanding the oil pump did NOT fail, it got clogged and it locked up. Clogged with metal? I do not completely know. He says this could have been over time, it may not have been. The oil gage would have read low for a while, it might not have. I would always check it upon start up and while cruising.
My new engine is tired, but it runs. So now it sounds like I really have a cruiser. At least it's moving under it's own power again.
I will pick it up soon, but someone needs to buy my blower.

Quit buying used motor oil! I would not doubt that the dealership you were getting the great deal from on the oil was selling you used oil! That would explain all the sludge you found under the valve covers and the crap in your oil pump.
Probably cost you a motor by saving a couple of bucks on that oil.
Sometimes its better to pay a little extra upfront then have to go back and pay alot later!
Glad your car is running-good luck!

Nope -was buying out of big 50 gallon drums at the dealership. Wouldnt doubt if someone screwed up and put in used oil from the wrong drum.
Would explain all the sludge in the motor -even though Dom said he religiously changed the oil. I believe him on the oil changes and think someone at the dealership screwed up and put used motor oil in. Hard to prove....and I could be wrong.

5W-20 is what the car calls for correct? I have seen in person and heard plenty of nasty stories about not running 5W-20 in a Ford product that calls for it, I will add you to that list! I have seen more than one blown engine from sludging when running the incorrect oil.
I am new to boost on the Marauder, was there a reason to run 5W-30?

I retract all previously said statements...LOL. There is a LOT of mis-information out there, although some of it has a grain of truth, most of the bad info originated back in the time of "your father's Oldsmobile".
Engines back then were huge and slow-turning (comparatively)...they had carburettors with chokes that never worked properly, we had lead in the gas, and oil was Group I solvent-dewaxed stuff that was little better than the sludge it allegedly caused. Engines and oils of today are light-years ahead in terms of quality, but people still remember hearing things that weren't true even then: "Pennzoil causes sludge"..."once you go synthetic you can't switch back"..."synthetic oil causes leaks (or oil consumption)"..."if you go over 3,000 per oil change your engine will lock up"...yada, yada, yada.

Glad you're whole again, Dom...I was getting worried that this time would be the last and you'd be driving something like this now:

You know, with all the hard times Dom has had over the years with engines, he ought to write a blues song about this. He could call it "My Car Eats Engines Blues". Make it sound like George Thoroughgood's "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer".
Glad you got it back running Dom.

Well I didn't have bad luck, it was all my doing. The cars on here wih 200,000+ miles are stock or have less than 10psi.

Cumulatively speaking you're at what? Almost 250,000 miles? Your odometer doesn't magically reset every time you put an engine in? Haha

Yup. I was bummed out when I found out Ride On Josephine was a Bo Diddley song. Did George write anything besides bad to the bone and get a haircut or was he too busy ripping off Hound Dog Taylor???

Hey George did dig deep from the roots but he and the Delaware Destroyers definitely had their own sound.
And Hound Dog Taylor had 6 fingers on his slide hand so it's kind of hard to compare those two.
Also Hound Dog Taylor & the House Rockers didn't have a bass player, dude with a Tele played the low parts lol.

Wow!
So much for that forged crank....:shake:
Is there even a bearing shell left on that Manley forged rod?.....
Dom did you put a bunch of Anti-Seize in the new engine?

Yes I am aware. I have one of his records with him holding some Japanese guitar on the cover. The recordings are almost Hasil Adkins quality without a bass player.

And now the post I have been putting a lot of thought into, the thanks I owe to everyone.
yjmud, for helping me with the transport of the car. He saved me some serious trouble by giving me a day of his time and keeping the transport safe. Before I decided another engine would be best, he and his brother Mark came over and gave the car a look. They were the ones that gave me official word that this engine was locked up. Yesterday upon tear down of the old engine, his dad said something to me I will never forget. He asked me:
"Did you learn anything from this?"
"Yes, I cannot take of the responsibly of a high performance car. I failed."
"Let me tell you something. Anyone that works on engines is a lair if they ever said they never had a bad experience. You did not fail."
I will never forget that. It's a good phrase to remember, not with high performance, but life in general.
LOWBUCKMM, this guy was nice enough to come with me and Becky in the middle of the week at 9:30pm to check out an engine in his town. He randomly texted me one night to say hello and I told him I was going to be in his town that night to check out an engine. I told him if we wanted to grab a late bite we could, but he decided he was up for coming along for the late night inspection. Turns out I needed more help than I realized. We needed some extra hands getting this Aviator engine in the back of the Mountaineer. He made it happen. After all of that, I was in need of another intake and MAF. He gave me his stuff despite that I could not pay him until the following week. (I need your paypal dude) Because of him I got the final topping on the cake and got it back on the road.
Zack, oh Zack, Zack. Zack... there is no one I ever met like him. Truth be told: When I told him about the car at first he found this funny. I never asked him to fix the car, but I did want him to check it out, tell me what was wrong and I would be on my way. It wasn't that simple. He told me what to remove and report back to him because he thought I could do it. Turns out I could not remove the cam covers and was getting more livid by the hour upon my multiple attempts. We had many talks though email, especially on the burnt car out east of us. When that feel though it seemed like Zack's assistance vanished too, his next email was for an Aviator engine that was just posted up for sale. The guy was asking $1,500 with transmission and he let it go for $850 with the complete engine.
After I picked up the engine, I was scared to death of this engine in the back of the Mountaineer, especially because of my near death experience a few years back with the engine lift in the back of the truck. I asked Zack if I could drop off the engine before he got to work on the car, he allowed it. I bought the engine over a few days early and he kept me safe. When I brought the engine over, he tested it that night to make sure it was worth using or if I had to hunt for something else. The engine was enough to work with, with a few worn out parts replaced. The car was towed over and both Eric and Zack were roasting me, I felt really horrible when I left after drop off, even to a point when I turned off my 50s Doo Wop and put on SLAYER.
After all of that, the car was back together. Zack thinks I live by the movie Christine because I keep having the car rebuilt over and over. He might be right about one thing, in the movie version the seller of the car did say "The only thing my brother liked in his life was that car." Well, I'm not that bad, but sometimes close to it. The car has been in a life since I was barely able to drive legally, so I think of it as a friend or pet that's always been there. From times where I felt like I was on top of the world, to times where I envied those that are six feet under. The difference between your friends/pets is when they blow up, their gone, with the car you can keep rebuilding it, it will be around. Zack is one of the nicest and caring people I have ever met. His approach to help might not be completely acceptable by society, but I get him, I understand his language. If you don't understand, you are the one at a disadvantage by excluding him from your life. I would do anything for this guy at anytime. Even when I was the total idiot or would not think I needed help, he has been there. Example from when I pulled up to his house once when I brought Waffle House food over after a road trip:
"How's it going?" -Me
"Fine. These bloody mary's are awesome. Where is the cheese burger."
"Here."
"Oh yea thanks! Wait! What is that noise coming from your car?"
"Oh that? It's been doing that for months, but it's fine."
"Pop the hood ding bad."
"HOW DID YOU MAKE IT HERE???"
"By driving the car."
"Yea that's great. Go get the flash light and a 10mm socket."
"Ok where in your garage is it?"
"Move out of my way. Go be useless over there."
"You don't have to do this."
"I know this."
"Thank you."
"I cannot believe your face. Do you treat your woman like this too? Do you push her until she has a breakdown?"
"No, she keeps me from having them."
"Bull***t!"
"No really."
"This car is like your life, it's a mess."
"Like my life, it's coming together."
"Believe it when I see it."
Zack is the man, I don't care what anyone says. If you disagree, it's time you wise up before it's too late.
Logan, he's the one that got us all together.
You guys for your support, help and advice over the phone, and asking if everything is ok. You've all been great.
JBreezy, for buying my S/C kit. I AM sad to see it go, but because of you, the car is back on the road and I am catching up on everything.
In the end, the car is back on the road because of everyone. It's really a special place here.
The question everyone has is what was I doing when this all went down. If you are thinking the usual, you would be correct. Details aside, an M5 and STI were taken completely by surprise upon the last run. When it went down, it went down in a blaze of glory.
I have been blasting this one everyday, the title says it all.

Ford spent a ton of money making these cars the way they were. Once you start to modify, everything goes out the window. Even top name racers who spend ridiculous money have stuff blow up.
Drop back ten and punt.
