View Full Version : Rearend Kaboom Help Needed ASAP

Took the car into the shop today because after having the rear axles replaced and rearend checked out about 6 months ago by a different shop, I have had a roaring ever since.

New shop just called and said the roaring is the ring/pinion mesh and it appears to be way out of spec and there is tons of metal shavings in the fluid. They think a full rebuild is needed with ring and pinion replacement. They didn't really want to take the job as they said they believed they would recommend a differential only shop to get it as good as it could be and use the right parts. This shop has 39 out of 40 5 star ratings...so whatever that means.

So they said parts can run up to a grand and labor another grand, and that they were hesitant about doing the job...this price seems high.

They did recommend another shop, which I will also call.

So my question is, if the ring and pinion has to be replaced and everything but the axles...as I am hoping they are fine...they should be since they were just replaced... then how much should I be paying??

I guess I should probably go 4.10 if I am replacing the whole thing, so BlueOval has the 4.10 ring and pinion (4.10 Ring Pinion Gears, Ford Pinion Nut, Ford Crush Sleeve) & Traction-Lok Rebuild Kit (Clutchpak, Shims, & Friction Mod) for $233.95 shipped. Do I need more than that? The only seperate thing I see listed is 31 spline differential...which to my understanding I don't want since I have 28.

So if I get the above 4.10 ring and pinion kit and traction-lok rebuild kit, and fluid is that all I should need, then labor? How much should I be looking at?

I also see Sparta has 4.10 gears with rebuild kit, install pack, and S spring for around 388.96...should I be going that route instead??

Searched and it seemed the average people were listing was $600 with rebuild installed...thats far from $2000...so I need to know before I tell them yes or no.

Thanks

One option might be to get a replacement from a junkyard?

Here is mine after the KABOOM! I did installed the ring/pinion with new bearings myself for a little over a couple hundred. Add in a shop's labor I would say $500-$600 should be about right.

Being that they said you need new this and that but would recommend you elsewhere. I'd try getting another opinion before I buy everything I possibly don't need. They possibly could be wrong.

And shouldn't be no where near $2k ...most rear end labor is $250-$300

But yes while it's apart might as well upgrade your gear.
My opinion I'd go 4.10 if its a road/highway car and 4.30 if its moderate city driving
(I have 4.10 but want 4.30)

Good luck!

:D Drove it home too! Shop that did the 4.10 install a couple years ago did not shim it correctly either... Sad that I can do a better job than a race shop...

So I just called Inland Truck, Certified Transmission, Leibrands Automotive, Christian Brother's Automotive, and Thoroughbred Ford. The cheapest estimate for ring and pinion replacement and a rebuild was $1800. Most wanted closer to $2300+.

:burnout:

'Race shop' probably couldn't figure out why you were souping up a Lincoln Town Car.

... but but but it's not a mustang. *head explodes* :mad2:

You could pay for tickets, fly me down and back plus parts and it would be cheaper... I don't eat much either! :D

I would see if there's a pony shop around or even maybe another member that has done this before around.

I doubt any estimates include a proper repair, which would include a complete disassembly and a power wash. The pinion area is very difficult to access and clean. Contamination gets everywhere. I recommend a solid pinion spacer, instead of the crush spacer, 31 spline axles, and a Eaton mechanical locking differential.

Your least expensive option is a used assembly.

Only 2 shops the mustang or race guys had any recommendations for, and both have horrific reviews and in fact have been removed as members from the sites they posted on because of bad business. Don't know of anyone local to do the work. Was fine with spending up to around $1000 on repairs, but $2000+ is more than I can afford for a rearend on a stock car with 100,000 miles on it.

You need a used axle assembly. Should be ~50 available in a big city like KC

2 Rearends @ Junkyards, neither are 3.55 locking...both with over 100,000 miles on them. One for $900 and the other for $850...and I might end up having to rebuild them... :(

Problem is our local cab company slams the yards and buys all the intakes, engines, transmissions, and rear ends as soon as they come in. Spent 3 months looking for a fascia for a crown vic alone, because of those cab companies.

I had to go 100 miles to get a drivers door for my MM. Too bad the cab companies are scrounging the yards in KC, that changes the game big time! I used Carparts.com for parts - very good source!

I do these on a regular basis, just finished a member's (GIGAN) from here yesterday.

A 4.10 swap, all of the bearings, seals, ring and pinion, carbon clutches, girdled cover (for strength) SCT tuner ( lidio or Moe's tune) installed out the door with all of the correct fluids should be around $1400.00

By the way, you can order all of the stuff through our site sponsor Sparta Performance and you'll have it in 2 days. All of it will be FORD MOTORSPORTS parts...I will NOT instal any other parts in one of our cars. They fit perfect with little to no shimming necessary.

Sparta is a great place if you need to buy the parts!
I had to rebuild mine a year and a half ago and got a great deal!

That's a very good deal! But he probably needs axle shafts, too.

Well I found a rear differential specialty place in Independence with a 1 year warranty that will do the work so I think I may go that route.

I am going to buy my own gears as I can get them for $150 and he will give me $240 off for bringing in my own. So that will save me a little bit. Now I have to decide on 4.10 or 3.55 and order them... If I go 4.10 I need a tune, so whats the latest on the best tune package deal for a otherwise stock car. Anyone offering a free tune with the tuner from them?

Take it to a performance shop that works on mustangs. Any good speed shop can do a gear change in no time and not nail you on cost. My only other suggestion is the dealer.

I tend to stay away from mom/pop shops for gear work.

Price wise it all depends on what is screwed up. If there is metal in the fluid then the entire rear housing SHOULD be removed and flushed/washed out. Otherwise its like putting a clean baby in a bath she just **** in.

Call Marty or Lidio...they both have fantastic tunes. Should be around $435 to your door.

Well I totally disagree with your theory on dealerships...sorry but most dealerships don't even have a tech that knows how to R&R gears.

I guess I was lucky. I paid well under a grand to pull my old stuff out, clean and replace with $410s for $530 everything is new except the carrier. Reused just refreshed

I paid $130 for my 4.10s FRPP brand new from a site I can track down
I have a spare axle I can sell you. $150 shipped to your door it's brand new still in the box from where I ordered it from.

If your looking for another opinion look up Procharger in your area. They developed some kits for the MM back in the day and should be very familiar with our cars. They can probably tell you who to go to if they dont do it themselves.

Sounds like you are on the right track with the upgrades. If you can swing it go 31 spline axles and diff. That way you wont have to worry about it again as it will be alot stronger.

Tune with 4.10 gears makes the car. You will be wondering why you did not do it sooner :)

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Really? The last 3 sets of gears I didn't feel like doing myself a tech at Ford did for me. So far so good. Although I didn't pay anything near a dealer price. LOL.

If you did not pay dealer pricing then it was not done at the dealer (or at least not on the clock)...most of our local dealers instal complete units only they don't "build" rear ends anymore.

Does it on the clock a lot. You can get a dealer to change out your stang's rear end gears. They just charge an arm and a leg for it. ;)

This may sound blasphemous, but maybe try the cab company that gloms all the parts. Cabs don't make money sitting in the shop, so perhaps they have a guy who knows how to work on rear axles properly.

YMMV. Closed course. Do not attempt. Use only as directed. Restrictions apply.

Thanks for all the help guys! The place I am going to take it to said they should be able to get me back running for a decent price, however I am buying some parts myself to save money (as they are giving me more money back on my own parts) so I am trying to figure out if I need the carbon fiber clutch repair pack? Its around $60 extra and I don't race the car and will have a tune, 4.10s, and the larger fuel filter as my only mods?

Thoughts?
