About 2 weeks ago I noticed a low hum accompanied by constant frequency vibration between 46 and 51 mph. This has progressed to a very noticeable rumble starting about 35 thru 45 with lesser vibs at higher speeds. Tire pressure is 35 psi all round, alignment is good. The sound is not wavering--very constant--it occurs no matter what gear I am in --overdrive on or off or coasting. Have an app't with the service manager that delivered my car new--he seems baffled. I am planning to make a 1,600 mile round trip at the end of the month, so I have to find out what it is. What I don't understand is that the frequency remains the same--just increases in sound and vibration--almost like the old drive shaft vibe. Rear axle bearings are almost new--no oil leaks under car ???????????? Anybody have any suggestions as to what this could be  I would like to be prepared when I go in Friday. HELP !! Maury

Tread cupping on tire(s)?

Pinion bearing?

Does turning make it change or does it stay consistant?

Axle bearings?

That's what the symptoms sound like.

Bad u-joint(s)?

Shift into neutral when it happens (takes the torque out of the drive shaft). If the rumble stops then it might be the u-joints.

I would check the pinion bearing but if it is making noise/vibration the seal should be leaking.
Good luck - I hope you get it fixed before the trip!

Got the MM to the shop today. Fluid dripping from r/r wheel bearing. Both bearings shot. Looks like an axle kit install. Is the standard GM kit ok for the MM. Quoted $ 900 for complete job. Don't we use the Limo kit. ????? Going in the shop Monday. This is the second kit in 145,000 miles. Thanks for all the advice. By the way--- the complete drive train checked out OK--- Whew ! If you have any advice, please post it before Monday. Have a great week- end. Maury

If you're running 28 spline axles, then the OEM kit should work. You may want to double check via PM to 03mmmonroe, he did my axle and bearing replacements, Maury.

That's the right kit & the right price if you are using FoMoCo parts and dealer labor.
Same axle for '03 & up Marauder, GM, CV & TC. I used Dorman PN 630214.

Maury, Krytin made the comment that the kit was the same for all '03+ Panthers, not just the Marauder. For the sake of any CV/GM owners who may be reading this thread, I pointed out that Panthers had 28-spline axles until 12/05, when they switched to 31-spline.

Yep I gotcha. I keep forgetting about the switch to 31 spline for the '05 model year.

Just got back from the auto shop ----both axles, both wheel bearings---and lots of metal in differential----the small gear has the tops of at least 10 teeth gone---other gears show wear---gear lube was black with silver---145,000 miles----estimate for axle kit and complete overhaul with all new gears for around $ 2,600 TTL. No, I don't want to change to 410s---should have done it long ago--now---just tooo d--n old to get the use out of them---all OEM Ford parts---6 hours labor. Delivered to me in one day after getting parts. This is my only car--I'm driving a borrowed van ( a real friend) so timing is important-----any advice ???????? Maury:help:

Find someone on this site willing to do it for you and pay them, you will spend no where near those sickening numbers.

Dom, you are right-------but there is no one in the DFW Metroplex with a private shop or that does this kind of major repairs on Marauders. Just got off the phone with Marty--he gave me some good advice that will save me some money. Also, this is my only car and the repairs must be done quickly---time costs money-----so you folks that live close to our great mechanics , don't underestimate their real value. Good luck with the new motor---you still need a Marauder in your life:beer:. Enjoyed meeting you in Louisville--stay happy, Maury

estimate for axle kit and complete overhaul with all new gears for around $ 2,600 TTL. Holy frijoles!

Had new axles, and all new bearings done in Phoebe for under a grand. (not at a dealer)

are they willing to show you the damage in person? If they arent I would suspect something fishy. Thats a very high price on that repair.

I picked her up at 4 pm and drove her home--no road time---she sounds so much better--no backlash or rumbles. The final configuration is--factory axles and bearings, Marty-O 4.10 switch- out original 3.55 complete pumpkin--and some fine tech work. Bill from shop---$1,490 TTL out the door. I haven't gotten my bill from Marty--
This fiasco started on Tuesday with the shop tear-down with diagnosis---complete change out ----pinion gear teeth over half gone and metal thruout the whole assembly--ordered parts from Ford Warehouse in Dallas---delivered at 1 PM Wednesday -----got a call from shop and went over---the parts sent by Ford were labled "replacement for Marauder 3.55 gears"---great--except the new pinion gear and other gear had 16 teeth--not 14 like original had--wouldn't fit of course--ran down the new Ford part #s-- this was a Grand Marquis 2009 kit ????????? called them and they said that was it--take it or leave it, they didn't have any more Marauder gears--period". A quick call to Marty resulted in the gear set being sent overnite UPS. Got parts at 10AM Thursday--soaked parts overnight--Friday final cleaning and install and testing. Got her back all washed and prettied up.
I want to thank all who responded so quickly and gave me great info to help me make quick decisions---and especially to Marty and Jeff--they don't come any better. Soooooo, tomorrow I'm taking the day off from the family and will take her out and let her run free again.
It's been one heck of an adventure, but all turned out well. My son, Kevin, and I will be heading to Antique Airfield, Blakesburg, Iowa for an "old timer's" convention of the Antique Airplane Association. There should be about 400 antique and classic airplanes for the week ending Labor Day--it is an Association members only Invitational Meet--no public admissions at all--a really great time with great people--been a member since 1970--(kinda like a Marauderville for airplane nuts :D) Round trip is a little over 1,600 miles Hope the weather is good.
Again, thanks everyone, Maury

Glad to hear things turned out well (other than the bill...;))

The Antique Aircraft meet sounds great, enjoy Maury.
