I perused the large thread about speaker swapping, but never saw something which broke the speakers down completely as to which speakers go where. I have a general idea, but there were some discrepencies. Some people claimed there was a 10" sub in the trunk while others denied it. Other's say there is only a 6.5" sub (which I can't say I've ever heard of).

This is what I think there is, based upon reading the many posts about it. Please correct me where wrong.

Front:
2X 5x7"
2X 6x8"

Rear:
2X 6x9"
2X 6.5"

Trunk:
1X 10" subwoofer

Does anyone have a wiring diagram or layout diagram that shows where and what is installed in the vehicle? For areas that have 6x8s, can they be modified to fit 6x9s instead? Is each speaker amplified by its own amp? I'm very visual, so if there is a schematic it would be most helpful.

As some of you may know, I am preparing to purchase a MM. I want to be sure I can buy it and do everything I want to it ASAP. It won't be stock for long...

The front doors and rear package shelf all contain 5x7/6x8 speakers. They can be opened up for 6x9s but you will have to cut metal and you must pay attention to the depth of the speakers in the doors. The sub is a 6.5" single with it's own amplifier. All the the other speakers share an amp.

Check around the site. There are plenty of people with trick installs in their MMs.

correct above, with the exception there is no other amp for the spreakers, only the sub has a devoted amp. the rest of the speakers are powered directly from the head unit. Oh and not all 5x7 speakers will fit into the front door openings, some are too deep to fit. look around for models that work well, personally I like the Alpine type S's in mine.

Welcome, There are alot of threads on this subject, when you are logged in you can do a search and pick up all you need to know.

I just finished the speaker/amp upgrade in my 2004 MM. I went with Polk momo 5x 7's in the doors(be careful here there is a depth issue) and Memphis audio 5 x 7's in the rear, there is no difference between 5 x 7's and 6 x 8's. There are alot of peeople here who went to great lengths to improve the factory 6.5" subwoofer. I pulled mine out along with the factory amp and installed an Infinity "perfect" 10 " woofer in the rear deck(this one is a "free air" woofer,it uses the trunk as an enclosure). I then installed a Soundstream 5700 5channel amplifier with 50w x 4 and 150 x 1 for the sub. The hole in the rear deck is oddly shaped so after extensive use of dynamat on both sides of the rear deck I bottom mounted the subwoofer. I like bass you can feel and this setup definitely provides it. I used Audiolink line level converters to converter the speaker level outputs from the radio into preamp level outputs. You will also need a remote turn-on trigger for the amp or run a wire from the acc fuse for the factory stereo, the factory turn-on signal is only 4.7 volts which is not enough to turn on most aftermarket amps.
The 10" subwoofer I used in the rear deck will not fit in the MMs with full sized spare tires, the 2004's have donuts.

I suggest printing out the door panel removal instructions at the top of the garage page and be patient on your install particularly on the pwr wndw/lck panel removal as there is a clip in there that is easily breakable.
I read alot of threads on different speaker options b4 I started.

Good luck!

rookie 1, there is a BIG difference between 5x7s & 6x8s, just like there is a difference between 4x6s & 5x7s. Larger is usually better for bass response as the larger surface area moves more air. 6x8s are usually used in Ford, Lincoln, Mercury & Mazdas. The sub is a oversized 6.5" or better known as 6.75". Since the front & rear are the same size, keeping both sets the same make & size are ideal in keeping the soundstage correct using the same amount of power without fading towards the front or rear. BTW, the amp can be tapped from the front with RCAs from an aftermarket radio by using the 4 wire harness behind the radio. The 4 wires are +, -, remoter turn on & ground.

alot of commercially available 5x7 and 6 x 8 speakers are exactly the same. they have universal mounting frame structures where you would use the same speaker using different screw holes for different cutouts. A few examples:

Clarion Power System SRC5794 (http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/CLASRC5794) 5 x 7" / 6 x 8" Plate Mount

In particular note that the Infinity's model number 6802cf would suggest that it is a 6x8 when it is actually a 5x 7 with adapter rings included.

I should have been more clear.

I installed INFINITY 572.5 CF KAPPA 5x7 speakers fore and aft. I listened to alot of different speakers at the stereo store, and these presented the best sound and clarity to my ears. Once installed in my MM, it was like night and day. Now I need to make a decision on the sub-woofer upgrade. Basically, you need to go listen and make up your on minde with whats been said in these thread stream.

I am thinking about getting a different stereo and replacing the sub while getting an amp to push the whole system.....has any body else done this? I already did the Infinity speakers at the corners....and it sounded a hell of a lot better......but I would like more loud clarity....

not trying to be arguementative, but there are 5x7 speakers made to fit both openings - 5x7 & 6x8 openings but NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.The Pioneer ts-a5713 is a 5x7 speaker. the pioneer ts-a68xx series is a 6x8 speaker and won't fit 5x7 cutouts. neither will the kenwood kfc-68xx series too. they too are only 6x8 fit. those universal 5x7/6x8 speakers are noticeably smaller than the 6x8 speakers. even those oversized 5x7 speakers (infinity, jbl, etc.) are smaller than a standard 6x8 speaker.
