Question on a 08 Mercury Grand Marquis

If anyone works for a dealership or has any information. Does a 2008 Mercury Grand marquis have any sort of black box recorder? If so... what kind of diagnostic tool would be able to pull data from it if it does?

This in relation to an accident and someone is claiming they were able to pull the last speed the vehicle was travelling at.

That is correct. And the amount of brake force applied, what position the driver and passenger seats were in, if the seat belts were buckled, if the air bags deployed, a multipul of g force sensors, for pre crash, pre deployment, g force during air bag deployment. The are a lot of other items that show u on the download as well.

Correct.

All the stored info that is kept for diagnostics has the added benefit of being used for accident investigation.

Even MM's have the similar. It's in the restraint control module located right below the center of the dash on the trans hump.
Police can only get it with a search warrant. Owner can get it for his own car, but you need special equipment or Ford factory help to retrive it. Gives the last 15 seconds info prior to air bag deployment. It's a self recording loop of info.

Ford used to require the RCM to be sent back to them, but now there are scan tools to retrieve the info. Very pricey for the public to get.

There is pending idea of legislation to make the data available without a warrant to highway safety people to compile accident statistic info but being slightly paranoid, I have my doubts about the noble use of it.

I know some PD's pull the info in fatal or serious injury accidents, but again, search warrant is usually required in a criminal matter.

All 2014 model l EDR units have to be readable by law enforcement and other government entities per federal standards. I am a traffic crash re-constructionist so I do have experience with Ford as most of my police departments fleet is crown vics. If you have any other questions let me know.

My understanding was that the EDR was under the driver's seat, but I've also heard it's part of the RCM (Restraint Control Module), which is on the transmission hump under the dash.

They've had those for quite awhile. Everyone seems to worry about the info being used against them but what if it exonerates you? Objective evidence cuts both ways.

If your super worried about it, cycle the key on/off 10 or so times, it wipes most of the data, such as speed at the time of deployment etc, there is still g force data which can be calculated into speed, but the mph will be gone, the rest is speculation, and math.

The seats just tell the module on the center trans hump in side the car just below the dash whats going on with the seats. The control/record center is in the trans hump module.
