View Full Version : Fuel Pump/Pressure Regulator diagnosis?

Hi everyone,

I recently got a check engine light for the electronic fuel pressure controller that sits on the fuel rail.

I checked fuel pressure manually with a gauge on the shrader valve and I saw about 10psi or a bit less with the turn of the key and about 30psi once the car started. I rev'd it and it stayed about the same if not dropped a few psi with higher rpm. If I pulled the vacuum from the electronic regulator on the rail it dropped to about 20 psi and would stay there even when I plugged back in the vacuum line.

Is this normal? I'm trying to determine if I have a dying fuel pump or a dying electronic regulator...

Also - if my pump is going out - what's a good replacement for my car - approx 425 rwhp...I have read the stock pumps are pretty good...

Thanks for the help!!!

Mainly concerned if I need to replace the fuel pump - I've read on the forums that 39 psi is normal and I've read 30 psi is normal...just need someone to chime in what is the correct pressure...thanks guys!!

from everything I've read or seen, it's 39 psi, anything less and your pump is on its way out.

There is no regulator per se there is a pressure sensor and the computer runs the fuel pump as necessary to get the pressure at the desired setting.

...and yes it's 39 PSI.

Ok great...I assume 39 psi with vacuum to the frps and not unplugged?

just changed fuel filter: less than 5 psi at startup, less than 20 while running, no matter if frps was plugged in or not. Took it for a short drive....no power to speak of. Fuel pump it is!
