I was just thinking how some of us have the 18" spare tire with the bfg tire on it, which is a great idea, except that the tire is directional!!!!!!!! So we can only put it on one side of the car, i guess its just russian roulette when we get a flat, hopefully its on the same side as the spare tires direction!! Or else were in trouble!! lol.

The tires aren't directional. That's why you can "rotate" them side to side.
The tires must be mounted on the rim a certain way. They have a designated "outside" sidewall

Good answer!

Always an answer to a question at MM.net:)

The only problem you might encounter with the "full" size spare, is that it's the same size as the fronts. Therefore, if your flat is on the rear, where the tire size is larger, you'll probably encounter the T/C light. Also, you would want to get the flat repaired/replaced as soon as possible as there might be some adverse effects on the limited slip gears. The same for the others with the donut! One suggestion that I made to a friend who needs tires on his MM is to dismount the spare and use it on the front and buy 3 other BFGs. He could put one of the rear sized tires on the spare rim just in case he has a flat tire in back. This will save the limited slip clutches from wearing but take up some more trunk space.

Just my thoughts here.

Will someone tell me why I need new rear tires after only 12k miles, lol. :burnout: :burnout: :burnout:

Anyone find an affordable source for OEM rear rubber?

TireRack seems to have the best price historically. I purchase back in November and the rears were $86 and the fronts were $85. They have since raised the price of each above $100. You can access TireRack through the link on the front page of the site, and if you purchase...the site gets $.

With the wider tire in the trunk I'd never be able to get it locked down. The front tire is wide enough that I can't get my arm between the tire and the package shelf.

Reach in from the bottom side of the tire.

One time when I needed to get the spare tire out I couldn't unhook it. My friend and I tried for the longest time but we couldn't get it out.

Personally, I lie down in the trunk to put the tire back when we are done with drag racing. It just takes forever to get it put back together.

Just thought I'd add this here, seems appropriate for those needing new tires.

You can safely run 4 tires of the same size with no disruption to the ABS system. I don't have traction control, so, I don't know about complications with that.

If you have lowered your front suspension either by cutting coils or buying aftermarket springs, there are new limitations to tire size. My springs are cut one full coil, and any size greater than 255/45 will rub on turns and under compression. If you're changing sizes, check your clearances.

Just recently, I bought tires on line, and took them to a popular shop that also sells on-line. The install charges were astronomical, 162 bucks to mount and balance two rear tires, and to rotate two rear tires to the front.

The manager said it was a new company policy, and the prices were fixed in their computer by the home office. He added that the only way around this, would be to buy tires AND new wheels from them on-line, and they would install the assembly for free. I called a few other shops from the same company in the area and got the same story. IMHO, Discount Tires Direct and Discount Tires America, is trying to make up for the losses they suffer when selling tires on-line.

I later got everything installed at an authorized TireRack service center, for 42 bucks. You can find the your local authorized installer at the TireRack web site.

Last month I replaced my rears due to the centers being totally worn @19K miles with the OEM.

Last week I hit a pot hole and got an egg in the front. I bought a new OEM front from tirerack and swapped the other good front with the spare using a tirerack installer.

The installer has a 1/4 only and a road race car.

No scratches to the rims and charged a total of $54.53 including tax and fixing a nail hole.

I had orginally planned on getting some different tires but the way things worked out I have 4 new oem's. For the price and the performance they are ok.

If I didn't have the spare tire I could fit in the Audi.
