I've got to replace the idler on my MM.
The small one, slightly to the pass. side.
Does anyone know how tight these things are suppose to be?
I've been told as tight as possible and I've been told just "snug it up".:confused:

If your replacing the idler I'd recommend replacing the tensioner also. They both get the same amount of wear.

Idler = 2.5Nm or 18 foot lbs

Tensioner = tighten in 2 stages - 1st tighten to 10Nm or 18 inch lbs, 2nd tighten additional 90 degrees.

I've been told as tight as possible NO!

Remember you're bolting into aluminium...crank down on it and you'll strip the threads out. If you want to work on these motors and don't own a torque wrench, buy one.

Thanks guys,

I will replace the tensioner while I'm at it.
And I won't crank down on the bolt, "as tight as possible" didn't sound right
to me.

... crank down on the bolt, "as tight as possible"

It is difficult for me to believe that people with such advise even exist!
