View Full Version : Lost Boost

:help:

So I get off the freeway last night and immediately realize I have no boost. No unusual noises, car runs like a N/A. All belts turning, pulley and shaft turning on blower. Boost gauge shows zero boost. Like I said no unusual noises at all. I'm thinking coupler in the blower or maybe a bad bypass valve?
Thoughts?

I saw this with another member and it turned out to be the bypass valve. His boost dropped from 10-11 down to 4-5. Replaced the BV and it cured his problem.

This should solve it!

(The valve not the dirty hand)

Well, the bypass valve is working fine. Pulled the belt to the blower and only the shaft is turning. Cannot here the rotators turning or the usual sound you would hear when turning the shaft. Disassembly begins! Yuck.

Well thats bad. If just the coupler was busted the pins that go thru the coupler should still hit each other when you spin the pulley. Hopefulley its just the snout shaft that is busted. Not sure how that would happen. Maybe the bearing froze up? Let us know what you find.

Here is basically what the coupler looks like. there are 3 pins on the snout shaft and 3 on the rotor pack gear. The stock coupler is spring loaded.

I'll be doing new snout bearings/seals/coupler next week. It's a crying shame the blower needs to be removed to take the front off as it sits too low in the adapter plate.

I will also try to open the bypass valve and see if there is something I can modify so it doesn't start to close until 5#s vacuum as my cams only give me 10 or so and the unit is designed to start closing at 11..

I need to address this before kaboom.

Well I hope it isn't the shaft, I had not given that consideration. I have to pick up a crows foot to get the last couple of bolts on the outlet plate to lower intake loose. Hopefully tomorrow night I'll know something.

Drats!

Looks like the shaft was already damaged/cracked around the outer portion of the inner metal core. There is just the small central section of shiny/freshly broken metal.

That is kind of what I thought as well, but it might be misleading as the front part of the shaft was still turning while the rear part was not and may have polished up that center part.
Anyway it is on it's way to Magnuson which saddens me that I won't have my car for Atlanta. On the other hand I just talked to Jerry and I will be bringing Trilogy 2 to Atlanta. :)
