View Full Version : Mufflers are literally falling off - need options for stock replacement
So...a few weeks ago at WOT on the highway, I heard the telltale sound of an exhaust problem. Quickly got home and noticed one muffler had broken off at the pipe. Got to my mechanic and he did a decent job of patching things up. He did say that the system wasn't looking too healthy and that I may need to get it replaced soon.
Fast forward to yesterday and the same thing happened on the passenger side. This time I couldn't even make it to my mechanic. The muffler was hanging about 2" from the ground. Thankfully the whole thing didn't fall off on the way home. Its only being held up by the tip resting against the bumper. In order for me to get anywhere I need to coat hanger it up which I am in the process of doing.
The problem now is I have no idea what to do. I don't have the cash to do a full SS exhaust so the best I can hope for is for my mechanic to weld some new pipe to the existing good parts and buy two new mufflers. My question to the brain trust is what mufflers do you guys recommend for a stock equivalent? I don't plan on doing any power additions at this time so I don't need anything special and I don't want to make her sound much different than factory. I like her just the way she sounded from the factory.
Thanks in advance.

These aren't stock equivalent, but they are still kind of quiet until u get on it. Sounds very similar to magnaflows. I have these on my mustang except I have 3" exhaust on it

If your coming to Atlanta I have a set of good stock mufflers. Or I can ship them to you.

I prefer Magnaflows.
You need a 2.5" center / offset muffler I believe.
Thank you guys.
Not long after I made my post I had a very generous member offer his low mileage mufflers to me for the cost of shipping.
Right now I'm enjoying her stock. I have my supercharged 97 Crown Vic to keep me happy when I want a head snap. :burnout:
One of these days though I'll be making that call with credit card in hand to give her some extra ponies.

Ok...I'm an IDIOT!!! For some unknown reason I never noticed I have Flowmasters mufflers. For all the times I've been under there I never saw the stamp.
So, whoever did the work put a sleeve on the stock inlet pipe. The setup is: stock pipe, straight sleeve over stock pipe, sleeve into muffler.
The previous owner clearly did some work because it already has rear deleted cats...
Since it was about 300 degrees at my mechanic when I dropped the car off I didn't even notice the number etched on the muffler. This time I was on a mission and bingo! It paid off to sweat a gallon of water.

So given what I have, can anyone do the Magnaflow equivalent conversion?
It's not pretty, but for a quick fix my mechanic did what he could given how and where they sheered off. I promise, he did good welds under there...

And just for kicks, the delete that the previous owner did. THIS mod I did know about. Kinda hard to miss. :P

Looks like the 14" case, which is 20" overall is Magnaflow 11225. There's also an 11" and 18" case version, 11365 and 11255 respectively. All these PNs are for the natural finish stainless BTW.

Actually it's a 17" case: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/flo-942451
Case Length (in):17.000 in.
Overall Length (in):23.000 in.
Thickness (in):4.000 in.
Width (in):9.750 in.
And yes I would want stainless. Not going through THIS again...
Closest Magnaflow seems to be: 2.25in./2.25in.18in.24in. 11255 (http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=11295)
However...after reading the Magnaflow reviews, I'm not sure I want to go there. I like my deep mellow sound. :depress: So...after some careful thought and a quick search, I think I'm sticking to my Flowmasters, but this time in stainless. Whoever the previous owner was that thought that Aluminized Steel was a good idea was obviously looking for a cheap way out.

Crisis averted. Direct stainless replacement found. :)
Good ole Flowmaster rust.
Get the MagnaFlows from Summit or Jegs
good luck
