About 4 years ago(96,500 miles) I noticed a loud thump thump thumping sound when driving. It was coming from the back of the car (rear axle)
I brought it to my mechanic and he said a bearing was not stilling right and was grinding into the axle. It had made quite a gouge into teh axle. Fortunately he was able to save the axle. He used a repair kit bearing and added 2 quarts of gear lube.
Now at 143,000 miles I hear so noise from the rear axle, but nothing like the thump, thump thumping sound. Not sure if it is a bad bushing or another problem in the rear axle area.
I know the design of the rear axle on the Marauder, Crown Vic ans Grand Marquis all suffered this problem. It is a rather poor design that started in the 70's and was never given an easy fix by Ford.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so did you just get a entirely new axle and better bearings? I plan to keep the old Marauder for as long as possible. So even if the repair is costly, it should be worth doing.
