Occasionally, when I turn my new Marauder off, I hear a fairly loud sound for up to 10-15 seconds. It sounds like an electric motor somewhere in the front left of the engine compartment struggling fairly hard. Any ideas of what it might be?
Thanks,
Mike

Smokie wins! The correct answer is: "through the courtesy of Fred's two feet."
Now, if Fred bought a Marauder, what would the name of the car be?
Mercurock Marocker?

It isn't the air compressor.
That's for sure.
I've heard the same noise form my Marauder.
It sounds more like the Radiator Cooling Fan spinning down.
That's how far up front the noise seems to be comming from.
I've heard the Air Suspenion pump, and it doesn't sound
as if it is up front at all.
This is a sound made when you turn your ignition OFF, not ON...

But if Fred drove a Marauderock, would the scenery still repeat every 500 feet or so?

I only hear it if the car is on for a very short time, which seemed to support the idea that it is the air pump.
Can anyone confirm the location of the air pump?

I have had this happen on other cars as well, all the others didnt have air bags either. Its common down south.

My Air Pump turns on about 10 - 15 seconds after the car has been started.
It runs for another 15 seconds or so and then turns off.
It also runs after the car has set for a few minutes, and it is restarted.
I asked my dealer about the operation of the Air Suspension, since this is the first vehicle I've owned that has one.
They say that the system will vent off some air from the Air Suspension while the car sits idle,
and the engine is turned off, to release some pressure from the Air Bags supporting the weight of the car.
When the engine is restarted, the Air Suspension will refill the Air Bags to correct the height of the vehicle.
It seems funny that this is how this works.
I would think that it just fills the Air Suspension and then adjust it as needed for the weight differences.
I just guess that FORD wants the pump to work a little extra so that it wears out faster and needs replacement. :shake:

The air pump is located under the air box. The air suspension system tries to maintain a proper position all the time. When you turn off the car and get out, the current pressure causes the rear to rise due to the weight of the driver getting out of the car so the system bleeds off pressure to get the rear back where it belongs. When the driver gets back in, the added weight causes the rear to drop down with the new pressure that is in the bags, so the air pump comes on to raise it back up. The air pumps last a long, long time. I have 2 '88 Mk VIIs that still have the original pumps and they have air bags on all 4 wheels.

I think your dealer doesnt know what he is talking about. I just got an 04 Marauder and from what I can tell the air suspension works the same as the Crown Vic's. I traded in a 1997 Crown Vic that I put 210,000 miles on that had the same air system. It maintains the pressure whether the car is on or off. To test, put some weight in the trunk with the car off and wait a couple of minutes and the air compressor will cut on by itself. I agree that the compressor kicks on often right when you turn the ignition, but I think it just cuts out the waiting time that it waits when the car is off. I towed a lot with my Crown Vic. You could hook a trailer up with the car off and wait a couple of minutes and the compressor with automatically kick in and level the car. If you didnt want to wait the couple of minutes for the compressor to kick on, you could just start the car and it would kick on immediately. I really have no proof how the system works other than my observations of the crown vic for 7 years, but I dont think its designed so that air leaks out at idle or when the car is off. BTW, I had absolutely no problems with my air suspension, and I towed a 1500 lb trailer a lot.

Then explain why my Marauder loses air when the car sits for few minutes, and after the car sits overnight.
If I reach inside my car and start it up without getting in, I can hear the pump come on and the car rise about 3" in the rear...
My Marauder has done this EVERY DAY since I got it January 2.

Before you cast a stone, make sure your info is correct.
My Marauder does NOT work the same way your Crown Vic works.
If I load the trunk of my Marauder, with the ignition OFF,
the Air Suspension will NOT turn on to compensate for the weight.
I've done it and the car has sat for over an hour
without any adjustments to the suspension.
Once I turn the ignition on, it readjusts itself.

I don't know why yours does that. Neither one of mine loses air overnight, even after about 23k mi on each of them.
Both of my Mark VIIs and the MMs work the same way, except the MM is rear air bags only.

I agree with your description of operation. All of my air suspension Ford products are that way. I think there is a timer, I know the system will bleed pressure out with the key off, at least for awhile. I believe it MAY even turn on the pump to raise it within the first few minutes after the key is turned off (at least the MkVII does). If it is like the Mark, it will not bleed off pressure until the door is closed (safety thing so the door doesn't drop down on a curb or something).

I just traded in my Crown Vic for a new Marauder so I could be wrong. I really thought they would work the same. I'm getting a trailer hitch reciever put on tomorrow so I'll see if it works similarly to the Vic when I put a load on the hitch. The Vic would raise the rear back up soon after I put a load on its hitch even with the ignition off. Even if I fueled the Vic at a gas station, went inside to pay and get a drink, when I would come back outside the air compressor would often come back on before I turned the ignition on. I agree that every time you add a load and turn the ignition on, the compressor activates.
