Hey everyone, I think my water pump is getting ready to crap out, sounds like its metal rubbing metal and my experience tells me it's going to go, any tips for replacing and a good source for the new part? I don't want it to seize on me and any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks guys
I've had good luck with Airtex brand pumps AW4128, NAPA has Gates 41118, or get one from Ford, I have not had good luck with GMB brand pumps so I won't use them anymore.
While you've got the cooling system drained it is not a bad idea to change the thermostat if you haven't recently.
Search here for the proper refill and burp procedure, it is easy to leave air trapped in the system which can cause overheating.

This one is better than the rest (best)
Inspired by top Ford 4.6L engine builder Sean Hyland, these EMP Stewart Components Mustang water pumps fill an industry void of high performance water pumps for this engine. These EMP Stewart pumps are also perfect as cost-effective original equipment replacement upgrades. They are available in both long and short versions fitting either of the 2 or 4-valve 4.6L Mustang powerplants.

You want the short version - the one in the link.
This is a great writeup:

I'm sure it says to burp cooling system (to get air out) This is very important. Look at this on how to properly refill the cooling system.

Good luck it's an easy job shouldn't take too long to do it right.

I'm still not sure if the water pump is going, sounds like it, but the info tells me that doing the upgrade is worth it, thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it!

Follow the write up carefully. Mine was leaking and I replaced with the EMP pump. Make sure to line up the bolt holes carefully in the correct location when putting the new part on. Make sure to carefully replace the serpentine drive belt back in the correct routing. Take the plastic radiator covering off to gain more access. Make sure to have a pan to catch spilled fluid under the engine on the floor and don't let your dog drink the stuff... Be sure to bleed the air out following the write up. The funnel taped to the inlet tube worked great! Good luck....kind of a fun project.

Make sure you lube the o-ring with a small amount of grease before installing.

Well the water pump is definitely smoked, out of all the water pumps Ive replaced over the years Ive never seen one so bad, ordered the EMP/STUART pump from Summit today along with a thermostat, anybody know the torque specs on the pump? I know they seal with o-rings along with the thermostat and yes I know to lightly grease the o-rings and no I wont let any dogs drink the antifreeze lol, maybe my neighbors dog tho :puke: lol, also the crossover plug, whats the best way to get that biotch out without causing damage to it??
thanks guys!!!

The Stewart water pump only uses 3 hp from the motor where the stock one uses 12 hp.I had to shorten the mount bolts cus the stock pump is a bit bigger base.
I noticed a difference in pickup as it takes some load off the motor.
I used 70 40 mix and it never got hot to MVXI.
A great mod.:banana2:

Just used a 1/4" ratchet on the crossover plug and it broke loose very easily, nice to know its not going to strip out

How much did you have to take off the mount bolts? 1/8", less? Does the stock pulley mount bolts fit ok? I know with under drive pulleys (Steeda, etc) they also have to be shortened

Just a spec tip for any of those who have to do a water pump in the near future, the torque specs for the pump to engine bolts is 15-20 lbs, just researched it and thought I'd spread some info on it, whenever I can help.

Absolutely will do, got a thermostat and doing a flush as well, why not right? It's coming tomm (Monday) and I've already started prepping her, looking forward to it, probably do it on Tuesday, UPS runs late here and it's supposed to rain but I'll have it done quick, been missing driving her, plus the wife's car is a 4cyl :flamer: lol

Did the install today and even if your water pump is good I highly recommend this mod, it's definitely worth the money, $150 and it's easy to install, I can definitely feel the difference in HP and Torque plus it runs a few degrees cooler, definite big thumbs up!

Everybody has been jumping on the EMP water pump bandwagon for a few years now, I went with an Evans water pump instead, IMHO it is a better pump as it flows better and is designed not to cavitate at high RPMs. No shortening of bolts, either.
If you are really looking for high performance, better to go with an electric pump like a Meziere, I just installed one in my buddy's drag car it is great for cooling down between runs.

Good choice, once you install it you wont be disappointed, it's easy to install and definitely adds a few more ponies, when you get it installed let us know what you think, I put in a fail safe 195 degree stat and she's running right where she should be, even a few degrees cooler. If you look at the first 5 or 6 posts to this thread you'll find the link to properly "burp" the system after the install, VERY important to do this right, Have fun with the install!!

Appreciate the info but Im pretty happy with EMP pump, quick install, I didnt have to shorten any bolts and from what Ive seen about the electric pumps their not as reliable, I also don't drag race my MM, electrics are good for some people also the Evans but with the low cost and ease of installation you cant go wrong with the EMP
