Careful - something's wrong with this car!

They did not make a Marauder convertible in 1964.
More importantly, they did not make a Montclair convertible - see here http://www.mercurystuff.com/1964-models/index.html
And the "h" engine code in the vin is for a 390, not a 352.

Someone has made big changes to this.

VIN shows this as a Montclair Marauder (57 = Montclair 2-door fastback). Someone either cut the top off of a Montclair or put the Montclair VIN and tag on a Monterey or Park Lane conv.

That's what I was wondering , I did do some research but I didn't get out and look at this car . I have found some other pics of it , & it does have a Montclair badge on the rear fenders ?

There is a VIN tag under the hood at the cowl on the passenger side. If that VIN matches the VIN on the Warranty tag on the door it's likely a Marauder with the roof cut off.

Now who would cut the roof off of a Marauder? Oh, wait a minute...

I'll have to check it out hopefully going bye there this week . Maybe that's why it hasn't sold yet. Been for sale for over a year at what I thought to be a fair price .

Ok didn't have a lot of time to really check it out but did talk to the owner who said it "had " a removable hardtop that was stolen off it ! And said its a 352ci original motor, though I'm sure he's wrong on that ! So did they make these with a removable top ? Looks like thats what it had from the holes on top of windshield pillers*

I don't believe there were any removable roofs from the factory.

I'm sure kirk will chime in with the correct info.

I know that Ford did make some "retractables" in the late '50s but not sure about later years.

I believe the '63 Galaxie is the only Ford that had the removable hardtop during that time. I think it had to due with racing. Read it in a Ford book I have. Gonna have to get my book out. It was an option for the conv from what I remember. Never seen one though so maybe they didn't sell any. Would that hardtop fit on a Merc???

I thought it was the 62 Ford that had a removeable top, mainly for racing, and the 63.5 lower roofline did away with the need for a removable top.

Removeable top cars were not readily available to the public, but I wouldn't doubt that Ford made a certain number "available" to get the cars legalized for racing. (In over 30 years of going to old car shows, I've never seen one.)

Retractable tops, 57/58/59 full size Fords.

None ever on the Mercs.

Ya, removable with a power saw!

Sounds like this is definitely a Montclair Marauder and someone had the same idea as David djv5150 http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=89463

The roof is the same as any 1963-4 Mercury or Galaxie 2-door fastback. No retractible top. Those were 1957-9, and no Mercurys.

It may have been the '62 I was thinking about...sounds right...

Ok well the guy told me it had a roof when he bought it and it would take 4 of them to put it on & off. Is it posiable* that the roof is bolted on from the factory ? I saw the pin holes on the window shield like a convert would have & the back deck looked like who ever did this did a decent job of making look factory. Still it looks like a good deal think I could get it for half of what he's asking . Just have to wait till I have the cash in hand !

No.

This was a custom job. Factory convertible parts may have been used, but it was not done by Ford.

Most likely doesn't have the convertible "X" frame either, so it will not be as solid as the factory built car.

I'd stay far, far away from this one.

My 2003 TBird has a removeable hardtop, but it was designed that way from day 1.

Even then, the car is a bit more solid with the hardtop on.

Keep in mind that this car does NOT have the X frame used by convertibles. It won't go down the road the same, and trust me, these cars slosh around bad enough as it is.

Second time we've doubled on this post. Thinking alike on this one.
