So my Marauder is making some crazy coming from the engine area. At first I thought it was the air conditioner compressor. I need somebody in the Philadelphia area who knows these cars. Any suggestions appreciated.

Step 1, remove the belt and start it again.
If it still makes noise prepare to be sad.

Yep she only has 38k on her. Can't wait to see what this costs.

I'm thinking its not in the motor, only due to the fact that its not affecting the performance at all. Hoping its a loose bearing in the water pump or something else that's not major

A/C clutch, common. Had to do mine last summer.

the idler has the potential to make a rattle like a broken valve spring.... when you remove the belt I would spin all the idler pulleys.

I appreciate all the advice now I just need a mechanic who knows what he's doing. My guy isn't sure what it is. I took it to a ford dealer and that guy said he's not sure either. Mind you neither really did anything except listen to it, but both responses were not confidence builders.

what does it sound like?

It's intermittent, only makes the noise for 10 seconds or so then stops. It sounds like a pulley going bad.I thought it was the clutch in the A/C going bad or the compressor. My mechanic said its neither and he believes its in the motor. I doubt it only because there are no signs of reduced performance. I check the oil before I drive it every time and its good. I'm leaning towards one of the accessories going.

is it like a tinging/ rattling?

Is it at startup?

It's not a ting more like one of the pulleys is hung up bad straining then it goes away. Very odd sound. Happen at low RPM, not sure of any other time cause I can't hear it from inside the car unless I'm next to a building or a car.

Happens after startup sounds like one of the pulleys is straining then it stops and starts again after 20 seconds or so. It happens at low rpm but I'm not sure if it happens while accelerating cause I can't hear over the whine of the exhaust.

if you hear it next to a building or a car, are you sure its not an exhaust flange gasket? It drove me nuts until figured it out. I also mentioned it to another member that thought his engine was making a noise and it was a flange gasket

I'm not sure that's not the problem. I'll look into it thanks for the tip.

I'm talking about the gaskets between the midpipes and the H pipe. if you decide to replace them, all auto parts store listings are wrong, you need the ones from a crown vic. Felpro part #60924 available at Autozone for about $3.00 each, you'll need 2

If its that easy ill be thrilled. Unfortunately nothing's ever easy for me. Haha what can you do right.

I'm goiing to ask this question because I haven't seen it addresed and your new to the Marauders, but could it be the air bag compressor starting up?

It's not the ride leveler. I could see where someone wold be concerned if they never had a vehicle that had that feature before.

turn off the heat/ac/automatic feature on the climate control. when on auto, it still runs the a/c to mix cold air with ambient air to reach your desired temp i believe. the easiest thing to do is take the belt off, and start the car, be minful that you dont overheat when the belt is off....you should have a minute or so to tell if its a pulley of some sort. if no sounds are imminent, its a pulley or possibly the belt.

With the engine off take the belt off and spin the pulleys, you should be able to hear or feel the noise / grinding.

If you are careful, you can use a long screwdriver or stethoscope to listen to the bearing in the pulleys with the belt on and engine running. You need to be very very careful when doing this!

If the tensioner or idler pulley is bad, which I suspect, replace both since they both get the same amount of wear. Also look at your belt, if there are any cracks and or missing ribs replace it. I prefer the Gatorback belt. Keep the old belt in the trunk as a spare.

That's good you check the oil, but before you drive means you're checking it cold. You need the oil at operating temperature before checking

I dont think it really matters mebot, warm or cold the volume doesn't change, just the viscosity. However there might be some oil drainback when its cold but i dont think it would register too much on the dip stick.

You ALWAYS check the oil level cold.

You should ALWAYS drain the oil when warm.

Cool fan had a crack in it. That was the issue and after a lot of searching its now fixed. Once it started spinning it must of been wiggling and hitting the inside of the housing. Running like top, now time to clean her up. Thanks for all the advice it's appreciated.
