View Full Version : A few Eaton Swap Questions inside...

I have a few (some might be dumb, but bear with me :o) questions regarding an Eaton Swap:

What is the difference between the intercooler and the heat exchanger? Where would the be located?
Will a 90mm MAF work from a Cobra?
What is a MAFia?
Are 39# injectors all that is needed for a "normal" setup with my mods in my sig?
What is the Boost-a-Pump for if the Fuel Pump gets upgraded anyway?
Sorry for the long list of potentially dumb/simple questions, but, I want to be ready to start to put an Eaton Swap together. It helps me to understand what each thing does and why I need it;).

I have a few (some might be dumb, but bear with me :o) questions regarding an Eaton Swap:
What is the difference between the intercooler and the heat exchanger? Where would the be located? Intercooler sits under the blower.
Will a 90mm MAF work from a Cobra? Yes. That's what I am running.
What is a MAFia? I am really not sure?
Are 39# injectors all that is needed for a "normal" setup with my mods in my sig? Yes. I am running 39# injectors.
What is the Boost-a-Pump for if the Fuel Pump gets upgraded anyway? Increases voltage to the fuel pump.

I have just basic knowledge of all this, and did not do the install myself.

MAFia: MAF Interface Adapter is perfect for applications where the stock mass air meter "pegs" due to increased air flow. When the MAF sensor reaches 5 volts, it "pegs the meter" maxing out the signal, preventing you from making peak horse power at higher RPMs, but the MAFia extends this signal allowing your Mustang to make up to 800 RWHP without "pegging the meter".

So, if you have a 90mm Cobra Mass Air Meter, would you still need a MAFia or is that only if you use a stock Marauder Mass Air Meter?

If you have the 90mm MAF you should be ok. If using the stock MAF you may need the MAFia.

The heat exchanger is a radiator for the intercooler system and gets placed behind the grill to cool the fluid from the IC. The IC cools the air that was compressed by the blower.

Anyone have a pic of just the intercooler?

If you are aiming for 460rwhp and below, use the 90mm MAF and 39lb injectors.

Sweet! Thanks! I would most likely have a conservative tune that would not stress out the stock block internals. From what I have read, I guess that would be 460rwhp or less.

So, does the intercooler get mounted INSIDE the intake plenum? I don't remember ever seeing it mounted on the outside, under the Eaton. I guess I am so used to seeing the intercooler in front of the radiator. Which, I guess, you wouldn't need a heat exchanger.

The heat exchanger goes in front of the radiator.

Which is just another radiator. A lot of people get the terminology mixed up.

Intercooler is attached to the bottom of the supercharger and lowered onto the lower plenum. SC is then bolted to the plenum, plenum then bolted to the heads. Then you carefully install the coolant connecting tubes...

Great pic! Thanks! So, based on what I am seeing in your pic, the INTERCOOLER must be inside the intake manifold. Is that right?

FYI, prior to this thread, I was under the assumption that the INTERCOOLER was in front of the radiator. Now, I understand that it is the Heat Exchanger that is in the front of the radiator.:thinker:

the intercooler for an Eaton setup is inside the lower intake plenum under the Eaton supercharger. the intercooler cools down the air charge from the supercharger and is filled with liquid to absorb the heat. a pump makes the liquid inside the intercooler flow out to the heat exchanger outside of the engine bay (usually infront of the radiator) to cool the liquid before it returns back into the intercooler.
the intercooler for the Eaton is called an air-to-water intercooler.

the intercooler you're thinking of that sits infront of the radiator is called and air-to-air intercooler. it is used on turbo setups or centrifigal supercharger setups... no liquid so no need for a heat exchanger

boost a pump is not needed, get a decent fuel pump and you'll be fine, 428HP with no boost a pump

Yea like a areomotive 340 fuel pump. That's what I have with a boost-a-pump. Don't really need the boost-a-pump. But for my plans I figured I'd put it in with the rest of the stuff I had.

Is it better to use 60lb injectors with a 500hp cobra longblock then 42?

For 500rwhp, Yes. Your injectors can fire more fuel in a shorter pulsewidth/time. 42's will be open the entire time at high rpms just to try and get enough fuel in.
At the bottom of this page is a handy injector calculator: http://rceng.com/technical.aspx
