View Full Version : What's the trick with the PCV?

I asked about the PCV before, but maybe I didn't ask the right question. I changed the PCV valve, but couldn't get the plastic elbow off the original one. So I went to the local parts store and bought a rubber elbow in the help section. Well it was fine for about a week, until it split down the center. (Probably why Ford used a plastic one!) So I looked at different part stores for a replacement, and Ebay, and came up with nada! I did find a PCV w/plastic elbow for a Marquis, but it says it's not compatible, though it looked identical! I made my way to the Ford dealership then and talked with the parts guy there. (I don't think this guy is that intelligent!) He tells me it comes w/the PCV, that it comes together from the factory like that! I tell him about buying one, and that everywhere I look, all I can buy is the PCV. He then says that I have to buy the hose from the upper intake to the PCV. That it will come with the elbow. Now I looked at the picture he was showing me, and there was no elbow! The hose itself curved onto the PCV. I know this isn't right! I'm sure there are many people on the site that have replaced they're PCV. Is there something I'm missing? Please, somebody help me with this. I can't believe I'm going through this much trouble over a PCV valve!

I thought I read somewhere that you need a heat gun to warm it and make it pliable to remove and then same thing to get it back on. I'll have to have a look in Ford serice manual to see what it says. Maybe someone will reply with more info until then.

That's the # for the hose, and it says it's not compatible. So are you telling me that the parts guy was right! I have to buy the hose to get the elbow?

That's what you need. Replaced mine just a few weeks ago. Make sure it comes with the elbow. First one I ordered had been snatched off. Second was complete.

Shop manual didn't say anything. What I read was on a mustang forum so it may not apply here.

No kidding! Alright, so the next question is, did you have to fight with the plastic elbow to get it on to the PCV valve? Because that SOB didn't want to come off of the old one. RubberCityRauder mentioned about heating up the elbow to get it off, so I'm wondering how hard it will be to put it on.

I used a hair dryer...

So the old elbow is removable if you use a little heat? There is no need to buy anything besides the PCV itself? Is that what I am reading? Seems to be two different tracks going on here.

That's what I was trying to figure out! I'm gonna try a hair dryer here in a few mins. It's really hard to pay $40 for a hose I don't need, to get a $5 elbow.

Again, use a hair dryer or heat gun.

Mine came right off. Maybe because it was soft & deteriorated. That's why I replaced it. My cost was under $20, so I wasn't gonna mess around trying to find an elbow. Retail is $33. This is what your talking about, correct??

Just to be clear, the elbow comes with the hose, not the PCV. Sorry if I didn't get your original question. The new elbow does indeed come off the PCV. Maybe your old elbow has hardened. The new one is pliable rubber and most likely seals better than one that has become hard & brittle.

Yes, and no. The elbow goes into the hose going to the upper intake. Not the elbow going over the hose. This is probably the replacement hose the guy at Ford was talking about. Here's a picture of mine. It's not a close up like what you have, but you can see a difference.

How long did you have to heat it up for? Could you pull it off by hand, or did you have to use some pliers?

I gotta say, the number looks different on the hose, than 3w3z-6758-ba. That's the one you said it was.

I see! Maybe mine had already been replaced with the updated part or a different part alltogether due to CA emmisions? I'd just install the updated part & be done with it.

I believe the actual number on the hose is an engineering #. I'm at work & just had the parts guy look it up again to be sure. The number I posted is right.

I used a hair dryer...
HAIR DRYER WORKED!!! I don't know why it didn't click to use a hair dryer, after I was told to try a heat gun. Now with the money I saved not getting the hose, I can get my authentication paper from Ford, to see what # my 2004 Silver Birch is!

You can also soak the PCV in hot water to soften the plastic elbow.
