View Full Version : GlowShift Gauges Installation

I decided I wanted to get a Bosch LSU 4.9 -based wideband for my new Cobra motor install. The 4.9 is a newer and better wideband than the traditionally-used 4.2 in older wideband kits. It reacts faster to changes in AF (you really see it in the datalogs!)

Here's some information:
http://www.ecotrons.com/Bosch%20LSU%204.9%20is%20super ior%20to%20LSU%204.2%20sensors .html

Anyway, I found that GlowShift sells a wideband gauge that is based on the Bosch LSU 4.9. Their product looked quite attractive and the pricing was good so I decided to order up a set of their Tinted 7 series gauges.

I replaced these AutoMeter Ultra Lite gauges in my gauge pod:

Here is the GlowShift product in nice retail-ready boxes (these were packed in a single large brown box for shipping):

I ordered three; oil pressure, boost, and wideband.

The wideband box is bigger than the other two; it comes with the gauge in a box inside, as well as the Bosch sensor.

The wideband controller module with easy and labelled plugs for the sensor, for the gauge, for power and ground, and for output to analog for datalogging.

The wideband also comes with a bung for installation of the sensor, as well as a CAP for removing the sensor and capping it off afterwards if needed.

The boost gauge came with a vacuum line T (AutoMeter didn't come with it), a mounting bracket which can be cut to fit most any application, as well as a mounting ring (AutoMeter sells separately).

I was impressed by the fact that the wire tips were neatly SOLDERED. No stripping or bunching required.

Here's the oil pressure gauge package.

No solder on this one, but it was stripped and ready to be wired up.

It comes with a mechanical sender which is easy to swap with your Marauder factory sender. It fits perfectly, however you have to add a ground to frame. The Marauder factory sender (and AutoMeter variant) have the ground built-in.

Aside from the ground to frame, I was able to use the factory sender wire to run the new gauge without any problems.

Here's a look at the GlowShift gauges set up in the Marauder's gauge pod. I was able to get them in without having to cut out any of the factory backing that the AutoMeter gauges fit against.

The factory Oil Pressure gauge makes this installation super-easy. The wire plug for the gauge has most of the wiring needed for these connections:

http://images.ioncross.com/mercurymarauder.net/10-16-2013-GlowShiftGauges/IMG_6678.JPG

- Ground
- 12V ignition
- 12V switched (headlights for illumination)
- Sender signal

http://images.ioncross.com/mercurymarauder.net/10-16-2013-GlowShiftGauges/IMG_6681.JPG

All that was missing was 12V constant, which I pulled from the one that was on the cigarette lighter (removed from my pod to make room for the third gauge).

Now it's all ready for plug and play (black plugs go into the wideband controller module)
http://images.ioncross.com/mercurymarauder.net/10-16-2013-GlowShiftGauges/IMG_6682.JPG

The controller module is tucked up nicely under the passenger side dash by the gauge pod, here's what it looks like before hiding it away:
http://images.ioncross.com/mercurymarauder.net/10-16-2013-GlowShiftGauges/IMG_6688.JPG

The wires going to it are:
- to the sensor
- to the gauge
- to +12V, ground, ignition, +12V switched (headlights)
- to FireWire cable for datalogging with SCT device.

The SCT device has a FireWire input on it for datalogging:

Here is the pin out for that plug for reference:

You can order a cable online from many places:

http://www.racingpartssolution.com/sct-analog-input-cable-datalog/
http://vmptuning.com/cables-and-accessories/6pin/

Or you can just buy a firewire cable and hack it apart, and match up the wires to connect it up to your wideband wiring.

This guy wrote a good post on the subject, I won't duplicate his efforts here:

Just watch though - the wire colors will vary from cable to cable, I had use a meter to figure out which wire went where on mine.

Love to hear your feedback a few months down the road, maybe I got a couple bad batches before but I had bad luck with glow shift...

Great write up tho!! As always from you sir!

I was interested in the Tinted 7 series gauges because they are advertised to be completely black when off. After staring at my AutoMeter gauges for the past few years, I figured it would be a cool change!

Here's what "off" looks like...

...and with sunlight on them:

Now for the money shots - what do they look like when on?

The Tinted 7 gauges have a button to press to change their color (except on the wideband). There are SEVEN different choices!
I think the Green and Blue fit the Marauder best.

The gauges work great, they're nice and accurate, and as I've said before, the datalogging with the 4.9 is very fast, the sensor is quite reactive. Here's a snap of a datalog, you can see multiple updates coming through every tenth of a second.

ISSUES!

Very minor. My boost gauge illumination flickers a bit. I haven't narrowed it down to if it's when the voltage drops in the car. Very intermittent.

The oil pressure gauge forgets its color. When the key goes to the accessory position, the gauge will properly remember the color you had it set the last time you shut the car off (green). However, when you turn the key further to start the car, it forgets the last color and resets back to the first color (blue). I am guessing it's the design of the car for the 12V constant I used (cigarette lighter) - power probably drops off when the starter is cranking. However, the BOOST gauge doesn't have this issue, maybe there is a larger capacitor in it or something.

I may have to make a direct run to the battery to solve the issues. Failing that, I will run both issues across GlowShift suport to see what they say and will update here.

Overall I give the product a thumbs up. Works great, looks great, though with some very minor quirks that MAY be due to the way I wired it.

Recommended.

Thank-you! I have this hanging in my office:

Words to live by!

I will post my results in a few months. Probably next year, as the car is shut down during the winter.

I would be revisiting all those connections you made before running any 12v wire to the battery. I have never had a problem soldering and heat shrinking there on many gauge installs.

Cool! I did run a primary ground from the engine grounding strap into the cabin for all my extra devices since I was getting "noise" from the frame in the dash.

This.

I had all of the same gauges in those exact locations.. Ended up moving them to the pillar, because they are completely useless down low.
