It looked like there was a small crack about a 1/2" long in my header when it was up on the lift at MVXI. I finally got the chance to pull the header and this is what I found.

Nasty crack, Are those cobra headers & how much torque is the MM putting out or is due to age.
I never seen headers crack like that.

They are FRP Cobra Shorties, I put down 440 rwtq with them. I don't think it's due to their age, it's the third engine in the car and they look a little banged up like somebody dropped it or slammed the engine down and it hit something. I've also been told Cobra Shorties tend to crack. Hopefully I'll have SW's soon

I don't know why anyone would drop or slam the engine down on them.
"Was wondering why the third engine"
When I did my Kooks full exhaust in 08 I did not know about the SW's,
They are more costly then the Kooks

Holy $&@?!!! That is the EXACT same weld and spot that cracked on mine! I ground that area down and MIGed the crap out of it. Went about 3/4 of the way around.

Cracked header? No biggie. The Buicks do it ALLLLLLLLL the time. I cant tell you how many times I have had them welded. :) Make sure whoever fixed it for you braces it with some material to prevent it from happening again.

Or spend the repair money on a set of long tube headers and enjoy even more torque and HP!!

On the Buicks it's just not sound when you have a crack, it's lose's boast and the engine will fall flat on its face.

Well...Box that bad boy up and ship it to Alabama...Will gladly MIG or TIG that "Lil ol Crack" as we've got a saying down here..."if you can step across it...it can be welded..."

Of course you would check the flanges for straightness after I would imagine. Wish I had. :D

Have made a few of these "emergency" repairs for the locals....Tack bolts to working "0" plane on header bolt pattern ...Pre-camber With washers (Slightly)to allow for weld shrinkage...Volia!!

I had 3 Ford racing shorty headers crack like that. Crap design! No room for heat/cool metal size changes
