Has anyone ever hacked into a steering wheel rim before? I've always liked how some of the luxury cars have part of the steering wheel rim made of wood. I was thinking that our steering wheels would look good with a charcoal/black stained wood piece at the top and bottom.

Kinda like this http://home.earthlink.net/~ctt9/images/steeringwheel.jpg

From what I remember, isn't the Town Car wheel (at least the 2004) identical to the Marauder's except for the wood sections?

Good memory.

Now the question is does the wheel come stained black in a charcoal interior Lincoln. If not, wonder how hard it would be to disassemble and restain?

I've seen 2004 Grand Marquis with woody steering wheels. I would imagine you could order one and swap it out for your Marauder steering wheel, because it is otherwise identical.

Shoot, this is gonna be a lot easier than I thought.

According to the Mercury web site, the wheel is available in dark charcoal, to go with the dark charcoal interior on the premium model. Just order the wheel and swap it out.

I don't think the dark charcoal applies to the wood color though, only the leather color. Also, I like the perforated leather on the MM wheel, something the GM doesn't have. Plus I need to make sure the rim thickness diameters are the same. So to do this right, I'll probably need a new GM wheel and an MM wheel (not chopping the original). Anyways, I think this mod is a GO!

Thanks for all the help.

The wood wheel for 2003 is about $391. They don't list a Dark Charcoal wheel with wood for 2004. You probably could use the 2003 wheel in the 2004. Lincoln wheels are almost twice as much. The part number is 1W3Z-3600-AAG.

I kind of get "woody" just driving my MM!

Marauderman, yes they will. Just grab a GM with the right color and swap. Might need a stain color, but I doubt.

Reason it's all the same is because it's the same wheel. Started out in the Town Car before it ever touched a Marauder I believe.

Did you even look at the pictures of the Lincoln and GM wood wheels posted? It's the same wheel but with stained wood inserts.

Went by the dealer and the MM steering wheel rim is the same thickness as the GM wheel. So with charcoal being available for '03 I may just strip the leather off of it, strip the stain and restain black and then have new charcoal perforated leather put on at an interior shop. Whoo hoo!
