View Full Version : 15psi = boom!

Here are some pics of my dyno when the engine sent a rod through the side and a picture of the damage. :bigcry: It's not printed on the sheet but the max boost was coming in at 15psi.... I had the +2 lower with a 3.2" upper pulley installed.. I thought with a good tune I would be ok, but I guess not. The good news is she will be rebuilt.... bigger, stronger, faster than before!

BOOOO! That sucks I'm sorry for your loss. That looks like aluminum block - was it stock motor?
A dyno pull is harder on the car than street driving, that's for sure.

Looks like this makes me want to keep my boost as low as possible to start with!
Any details on what actually happened? Air fuel ratio? Detonation? Mileage?

If you add enough fuel and pull enough timing, 15psi is fine on a stock block. There was most likely a pre existing defect and even @ 12psi it would have gone south eventually.

I'm at 60k miles. It happened during the last dyno pull.... it was under more stress then it probably would have ever seen outside the shop. The A/F is there and looks OK.

Comforting :alone: At least it happen at the shop and not 1000 miles from home!
All I can do is move on. I am going with an MMR short block. I'll give more details once things get going along.

With a mustang dyno and auto I'll bet that car was doing damn near 500 to the fly. The rods got over powered. They are **** in these cars. Anything past about 420-430rwhp (dynojet) is borrowed time territory especially if you are a frequent go pedal smasher. I know, "so and so got away with 600hp" but Ford never really intended these rods to be used in supercharged applications. See "iron fist/lead foot" Give em hell on the rebuild!!

Name of said shop? So I can steer clear of them. Why wasn't this shut down well before that? The pre existing condition I understand, are you referring to the second or third pull that created the pre existing condition??

I can happen with ANYTHING at any time. I know of a low mile Aluminator that just lost a piston. It was being datalogged at the time and Nothing unusual was going on. Very safe fuel and spark and it still went POOF!

Doesn't change the fact that they should've shut it down and told him he needed a different pulley combo. What they did was reckless and they know it.

15psi will kill the stock rods/pistons and fattening the a/f too much will eat up pistons...yes, too much fuel and retarded spark will ruin the pistons.

And why would you say this
In the motor business it's " you get what you pay for" or is it?????
Just because someone pays a shat load of money for a motor doesn't mean it's going to stay together. After all, they are mechanical parts and pieces put together by humans.
Like Paul Harvey said " And now you/"I" know the rest of the story" ;)

I thought Dyno runs were harder on a vehical then actual driving.... but yes, I wish they would have stopped and put on my other pulley!
Whats wrong with MMR?

For 15 psi your numbers look low. When I was at 9psi I had 412 HP.
The rods and pistons just suck on these cars, I also blew a rod out he side of my engine.
I bought all my new parts and a new aluminum block and had MMR do it. So far so good.
Drop this in. Already proven and ready to go.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=88385
BTW, it's not just the hp to the wheels that killed it. A belt driven SC adds a lot of stress to the crank and rods. Probably 75-100 hp or more to turn that thing at those boost levels.

I did notice that after I paid more attention to the video and forgot to edit that post later that day. Remanufactured blocks too, I might add. Thanks for the info Todd!

I agree with Blazen71, I had another buddy take a car up there, never got it right I am not impressed with them. Thats why I took my car to all the way to Detroit at Lideo shop, happy customer here he took care of my tune. I am running high compression but it was not prob. for him.
Hey have we met I don't remember you by your screen name.

Hmmm, I don't recognize your screen name either. Have you been to any Maraudervilles?
unfortunately it is too late for me. I am having West Bend Dyno put in my new engine but I was thinking (and now with what you 2 say I will for sure) of taking my car to Lidio (or Moe if I can get that far) for a good reliable tune. Is there anywhere in Wisconsin that does a good tune? I'm 0/2 with 1 engine down!

No Maraudervillve is always too far to go. I run around Waukesha all summer with mine and do small trips with it. if you want to meet up and shoot the bull let me know, blazen71 and I had a couple beers last night. As far as a tuner I don't like anyone that is local for our cars, go to Lidio or Mo. :coolman:

Just take it to Lidio and be done.... Its safe and reliable and he knows these cars inside and out!
Plus I am sure Jerry and I will join you for some xmas in a cup while your car is worked on!
