Just got my 2003 Mercury Marauder back from the paint shop Thursday.
(It has a build date of September 23, 2002).
Had the engine hood, roof, and trunk lid completely stripped to metal and reworked.
As some of you may have seen this year at Carlisle and New Hampshire,
the base coat was fading ; and the descriptive term used was "chalking".
The clear coat was in good shape, just the base coat was deteriorating for reasons unknown. When I put the car into storage for the winter of 2011/2012 (November) and out of storage (April); the horizontal paint surfaces chemically changed in those few months.
The paint pro's showed me pictures of their paint stripping process; they discovered 5 black base coats; the car was repainted previously. Most likely the car had been repainted under the Ford warranty back in 2003. The paint pro's explained that Ford had a history of poor paint processing on Aluminum including solvent issues.
Anyway the MM looks new again. The paint guys used Dupont products, and I couldn't be happier.
Next week the Marauder goes into winter dry storage for five months.
