I picked up a 2001 Mustang GT with an auto for the wife. It has 60k on the odometer, I got it for a great price and I had to do a little here and there to it along with some minor mechanical stuff. But my margin is quite wide, what I paid and what its worth is a difference of about 6k plus I did all of the minor body stuff myself and most of the mechanical.

I replaced the U-joints on it, it had a rumble similar to bad U-Joints so I replaced them. Part of the vibration/rumble subsided but when the car makes 3rd a vibration in the drive train is detected. It will do it in TC lockup, 4th is a bit smoother. Mostly feel it in third on acceleration.

I see this is a common complaint for "New Edge" owners with automatics. But very few threads finish out with a good answer into what it is or was. They make mention of changing to Mercon V, or changing the convertor. I did try the lubeguard "doctor tranny" not much difference there, although I did it on the old fluid.

I am going to change the filter and I think 01's have the TC drain plug. So I will switch it to Mercon V and re-add the Lubeguard. I did hear that some TC's in these cars lose fins and they settle in the convertor housing disrupting the balance or they suffer from worn lockup clutches. Has anyone here ran into this problem? It appears to be an issue with Mustangs with automatics. Thanks, Richy

Sounds like the converter lock up. I would j-mod the trans when you do the fluid, and it should be good then. I would leave the accumulator springs in though since it is the wifes car.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I am going to swap out the convertor possibly for a Marauder convertor. Its a little looser than stock and it does not seem to have the above issue. And I will change the filter and fluid.
