I'm looking to get the jmod done since I need to service my transmission at 60k anyway. Anyone know where I can get this done ? Or any insight on how to do it.

Somewhere on here is a full write up, do a Google search for 4r70w jmod.....the thread will show you which holes to drill larger and such....it probably wont make too much sense to you, but a transmission mechanic will understand.

Shoot me a private message on here letting me know about when you are looking to get it done, and I will give you all the info you need and when we can do it if you are interested

Actually fairly easy to do with common hand tools.

You'll enjoy it quite a lot. I went from barking the tires at the 1-2 shift to spinning them.

Here is the JMOD How-To video just so you have an idea of what is it and how it's done.

Really think about this. If you use the car as a daily driver, especially in stop and go traffic, you may want to keep what you have. The j-mod, as described, really firms up the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts but in stop and go traffic it can be very annoying. This can be softened by adding different springs, purple and blue iirc, but it will still be firm. If you are going to race the car then its more appropriate. My car was j-modded when I got it and it was ok for about a month but it shifted waaaay to firm and completely took away the luxury ride and constantly threw you back in the seat. Just a thought from the other side of the fence.

The shifts can be "Modulated" in the tune!!

My 1-2 shift was so hard it would rattle your brains even at light throttle....as stated above it was VERY ANNOYING!!:argue:

My tuner modulated the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts under light throttle conditions and they feel more like stock but still quick without slipping....above 1/3 throttle they get firmer and above 1/2 throttle they snap pretty hard!!:bows:

I'm sure adjustments can be made in the tune if the shifts are too hard with the J-mod and remember your transmission will live much longer with the J-mod!!:D

Correct. My j mod was pretty harsh as well but I dialed the pressure down to 0% between shifts. It's perfect for my driving now.

Ok so I'm guessing I should get the jmod before I get a tune then.

If you do the jmod and dont like it its not the end of the world, you can go back to stock but you will have to drop the pan, reinstall all springs and buy a new separator plate with gaskets. Just be sure to keep your old parts. Of course you will have to refill you trans again with fluid. I had a tough time finding a new Ford separator plate for my '04, the parts guys wanted to sell me a whole valve body with plate at big $$$. I finally found that starting in '07 Ford offered a specific part number for the plate and was able to order it that way. I kept the jmodded plate but later sold it to a member on here. I also put in all new springs (green, blue and yellow for the 1-2 and brown for the 2-3) and 1-2 and 2-3 pistons, figured why not. My trans feels brand new. Food for thought.

Here is a post about it:

No not necessarily. You can get a tune before a jmod.

Yeah it was pretty harsh. Always good to set tune shift pressure to 0% first then dial up it up if desired.

All the information you every want to know about your transmission (including how to do the J-MOD, and just about anything else). Written by the guy who designed the AOD, 4R70W and 4R75W.

http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/index.shtml

(Somebody ought to put this in the FAQs, since its on another site and only us "old timers" remember it.)

im wondering if a shift kit would be as good as the jmod?

Marauderjack

Jerry (Dr. J-Mod) discourages all "Shift Kits" and explains why in one of his videos.....maybe someone will guide you there!!

Why spend the money for a "Shift Kit" when a few holes drilled out and a couple springs removed will get you there and the cost is really only for the fluid and your time!!??

I see.. hmm,

Thanks for the reply. It seems most of the jmod guys live up north. And i wouldnt want to ruin my tranny attempting to do it. Unfortunately, I leave mechanical work to the pros when it comes to my car. Thats why im just considering the kit, stall, gears, and call it a day:beatnik:

Learned a trick last time I was in a 4R70W, get a rubbermaid under bed organizer, and use it as the drain pan, it is wider and longer then the spill zone! lol

They make a pan with a drain on it for easier emptying.

or you can add a drain plug yourself:

i used one like this but it only cost like $3 at a FLAPS. all you need is a drill, and drill bit.....no tapping required. the o-ring that comes with it is garbage, i recommend getting a rubber washer with a metal backing washer from home depot. i picked up a pack of 3 for around $1.
