View Full Version : Whirring noise

A few days ago a whirring noise appeared. When I rev up the engine in Park, it kind of sounds like a cat going "meowwwwww". I thought initially it was the power steering - fluid (level is fine) or pump - or perhaps alternator bearings, but listening revealed the sound to seem to come from the passenger side. So I figured one of the pulleys on that side: two idler pulleys, tensioner, or AC. Engaging the AC made no difference to the noise, so I thought one of the idlers or the tensioner pulley. I tried listening through a empty paper towel roll tube placed close to each, but I couldn't tell if any was louder with the noise than the others.
When I took off the belt and spun them, they all seem to move freely and without noise.
Any suggestions? I am thinking just start replacing each since they are not really big ticket items and see if it clears up. I replaced the drive belt about 2 months ago.

I'd replace both.

If the car has a tune its likely from the Alt shutting off at WOT.

I seriously doudt he is revving his engine to WOT in park every time he simply starts it up!:shake: More than likely a bad pulley bearing.

Today, I had my 12 year old daughter behind the wheel to rev it up while I listened. It was her first time sitting there, and actually she did hit WOT right off the bat, lol. But yes it seems likely a pulley bearing, just not sure which.

You would be surprised at what people do.
Got a panic'd call from my friends sister yesterday. She put a quart of transmission fluid in the oil of her car. *Face Palm*

Replaced both idler pulleys, and the noise is gone, so it was one of those two. Glad that was it!
FYI: the motorcraft part numbers for them, if anyone needs it:
Grooved - # YS-249
Smooth - # YS-245
When I was trying to order, most sites would indicate that they would NOT fit, for some reason. But they did.
