O/D????????
I thought using the O/D was a good thing. Can someone please tell me when can I use it because I heard using it could damage my trans. also I noticed a lot of vids of MM's racing and WOT pulls with it off.

When you are stomping about turn off the traction control and o/d

Ideally you don't want to use O/D when you're driving around town. O/D is for cruising at constant speeds. Driving with O/D off increases line pressure slightly for a little but crisper shifts.

I drive with OD on all the time.... just remember to click it off before burying the pedal while cruising, burnnouts or stop light racing.

You want to avoid shifting into top gear O/D band at WOT. I usually turn it off to let the car downshift and then hit it. But O/D itself doesn't hurt..it helps achieve better gas mileage when cruising.

Ive heard after my tranny rebuild, that the od band is a weak part in the 4r70w trannys. The bad part is: downshifts into 2nd gear from od/4. This means if your cruising around in 4th gear(speeds 36mph and over*stock tune*) it is wise to turn off od/4th gear before punching the pedal. I dont think it hurts it to drop from 4th to 3rd, or punching the gas from a stop, however i could be wrong on that....im under the assumption that it only hurts the tranny when the od band is being used.

dont they make a different material o/d band so it doesn't matter anymore, i think it was Kevlar coated or something..., i just know it was made of a harder material

Even it if there is a Kevlar OD band I would think the shock / stress from down shifting from 4th to 2nd would cause other parts to be stressed and break.

What's this OD you speak of? :)

^^ This right here. When it was an automatic I never took it out of OD in 80,000 miles of ME driving it, unless to pass. I also never once clicked it off for burn outs and rarely for track use.
It's the 4-2 that will eventually kill it and also WOT into 4th. I did more than a few 4-2's passing traffic without the time allowed for waiting without fail but certainly counted my blessings. When I decided to go manual, I was running 4.30's at the time with shorty drag radials and stayed in it thru all four gears at the track for at least 4 runs and still didn't smoke it trying to! Keep in mind I am also way over stock power to boot..
You will not kill it taking off and getting out of it in third.

Is o/d only pertain to fourth gear or torque converter lockup in third or fourth?

O/D and torque converter lock-up are two different things.
Overdrive is just another gear, with a ratio of less-than-one to one. I believe in the 4R70W it's .83 to 1.
Torque converter clutch lockup bypasses the fluid coupling in the TC and makes a direct mechanical connection, just like the clutch in a manual transmission car.
