There is a Cal emissions sight that lists all mods that have the carb exemption number
JBA and Kooks models both have the numbers, however, neither were made for the Marauder thereby making the number invalid (just went through this in Mass which is actually tougher on emissions than Cali)
That having been said, the only way to get busted on this is if your tube flags something in the computer that will cause them to look harder.
What I can tell you, do not remove the front cats, if you have the wrong inspector they will fail you for removing emissions equipment which is illegal.
The short answer is, headers are tougher in Cal and Mass, but not impossible. Hit the mustang boards and even the EVO boards for what they are doing and how they get around it. Contact a local speed shop and ask about their experiences.
Exhaust yourself doing research and it won't cost you a senseless 1200 like it cost me. I didn't research my state inspector until after, turns out he has a reputation for failing people until they return to stock since I got flagged by the state, I was stuck going to him. Did some research, found a local tuner who guarantees a pass no matter what's done to your car and got approval to go to another inspector.
End of story, I yanked the headers, kept the boost and the rest of the mods, I'm legal and headers are going back on

Get in touch with the folks at StainlessWorks. I'm sure they sell headers in California for other cars so perhaps if they see a demand they will look into CARB certification for the MM set up. :)

My understanding is that CARB certification is very expensive (IIRC something like $30,000?) and I doubt Stainless Works will sell enough for the Marauder to recoup the cost.

Has anyone tried fittting a set of CARB legal JBA shorties that fit the mustang 4.6L that"s used in the Marauder?

Yes there are several. I am running ford racing shorties and will be going to cobra manifolds so I can smog. Save your dough for a Vortech SC.

Again folks, I'll add, unless the headers were designed specifically for the Marauder, the Carb number, even if present does not apply. Massachusetts and Cali are very similar in requirements.
However most inspectors will allow it through if the tune reads right and it does have the carb number.
I will reiterate, check local boards on this exact topic and read what they are doing before you have any work done, it can be much more difficult than you imagine, trust me I know

Thanks guys for your imput, I'm going to try fid out more info locally. Since SC was brought up, what do guys think about that 50 state legal kit from Reinhart. I just want a daily driver that's fun. Maybe the SC kit and some 373 gears?

I have a Vortech air to air centrifical and passed no problem. If you have finds, boost is the way to go and is legal in Cali.
That having been said, I'm not saying go to Reinhart or not, but research him on this site. There are MANY members here you have been completely ripped off by him, and some who haven't. Hear it once, maybe it's a rumor, hear it a lot you have to lend it some credence

Make sure you get a Vortech with the right CARB # on it (D-213-27). A Paxton will not do as it lists only the Mach 1.
