View Full Version : Oil Filter housing leak

Been noticing oil spots on the garage floor that have been larger and larger over the past year so it was a slow leak. Finally had time to climb underneath her and take a peak. I traced the leak to the oil filter housing and have also noticed it has become quite a leak now. Is there probably just a new gasket that I need or could it be a warped housing and I need a new one?

Guess quickest and easiest( and least expensive) first. Part # for the gasket??Filter housing if I need it??

Just replace the gasket.

I know its pretty straight forward but every since I got my car back in October I have become a post-a-holic on here. I feel like I gotta post every time I touch the car lol so please forgive....

Keep an eye on your oil level until you get the gasket replaced, try to do it asap!

When mine went it I had two quarts missing like overnight.

Keep in mind it is also a coolant passage.

Yep after noticing how big the leak is now I won't be driving it until I fix it

get the Felpro replacement gasket #70801 stay away from the oem garbage.

I just changed mine, drain the oil, remove the filter.
Drain the antifreeze from the block and radiator. I removed the wire from the sensor as well.
There are 4 bolts holding the housing on, if you position everything right you
Can get all 4 off with a ratchet and a long extension. I have an extension with the built in swivel tip and it's perfect for this job. The factory part isn't bad, it did last 125k miles. I paid 22 bucks for mine and the dealer had it in stock. Once it's off, gently clean the surfaces then take the new gasket and line it up on the oil housing and push at least two bolts thru the oils housing while holding the gasket on it, the bolts will lock into the gasket making it easy to install. Hand tighten the two then the other two making sure the gasket is on right. Then once they are all on, tighten with your ratchet. It's more of a plastic spacer with o rings and channels than it is a gasket. All in all it's relatively easy to do. Have the car cold and on ramps, install the filter and 6 quarts of oil then fill the crossover pipe with the two gallons +/- thru a funnel sealed to the crossover threads. Always keep the funnel full and start it up on the ramps and massage the top hoses until you get no bubbles, lots of heat out of the vents and heat from the rad when the fan comes on. Never let the level of the antifreeze drop in the funnel. The best antifreeze out there is Honda Blue. It's expensive but worth it. 19-22 bucks a gallon but by far the best formulation for aluminum motors.

I just did mine too. Tools your going to need: extensions...i think i had 3-3" and a 6" extensions all together, 13mm socket, i had to remove the oil pressure sensor..so i used a crecent wrench, some swivel joint for the socket, and a big pan to catch the coolant when it rains. Took me about 2 hours of work....including trying to find more extensions to use.

Have done this several times, one error trap is over torquing the bolts, check but 12 lb-ft is correct.

Yep, was going to say that, watch the bolt torque. Also make sure you match up the old gasket with the new one. There is another type that was used on the CVPI's with the oil cooler. Some parts places list that one for the MM. If you use it, it leaks. Found that out on one I took apart that was "just fixed" by a shop and was leaking again. The two gaskets are noticably different and a person with average intelligence should not get them mixed up.
