What is the reason that we can't get the search fixed on the site? Is it a money thing? Time thing? Why?

I still want an answer...just stupid to have a site that many of us pay to use and we can't utilize a basic function. The site claims to be informative and insightful but you can't search anything on it...

I've never had a problem. Have you tried the "Advanced Search" function?

I think you have to have the "boosted" version of the site. Have they not sent you the download yet?

You've said this in the past, what is your secret? Do you use quotes, + signs ? I try typing the exact thread title in and it's on like the 4th page.
I was easier with index cards

I have no clue what y'all are talking about. How about specific examples. The search function is integral to the vBulletin software. What do you want it to do that you're not able to do?
At some point soon, we will have to upgrade the whole look, feel and functionality of the website to keep up with the support of vBulletin.

O.K., so I am working on Lmark's car and I want to search the forum for AIT issues, so I click on search, then type in AIT issues, or code, or anything and the results are nothing but general posts...they have nothing to do with my search criteria...

My next statement is not meant to start an argument or bash fest in any way, it is my opinion...however I know it is shared by MANY.
Along with this upgrade, the site should be allowed to grow beyond the tired level of strict functionality that it is...I know the owners want things to stay the way they are but unfortunately the first group of people involved in this site are onto other things in this life or the next...That being said the newer / younger crowd is different. Our sense of humor is different, our outlook on life is different and our tastes are different. If the owners don't care to have the site continue to grow or at least maintain its current level of membership, then simply don't change...but remember this when you are sitting at Carlisle or Marauderville and there are only four of you sharing in what used to be a family.
I hear the term family used to describe this place, I thought that a true family over looked the differences that each other has and makes compromises to accommodate each other. Its no secret that we have lost or "excused" many of the core group of people due to differences in opinions on what should or should not be posted...we have asked for a private section / non public page where we can joke around and talk freely....why is this such an issue? The forum would not be adversely affected by something the public can't access...where is the issue? Why can't you guys let go of the reins just a little, it won't be a bad thing...if it is you can delete it...why not try something new instead of digging your heels in and starting a pissing match?
PLEASE DO NOT START SLAMMING THE MODS / OWNERS, THAT IS NOT WHY I POSTED THIS....

What does this have to do with the search function?
Honestly, Chris, we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. "The Dark Side" was such a "freedom" many years ago and unfortunately it brought out the worst in the membership. A number of people were hurt by the bullying and down-right nastiness in the "no holds barred" forum. Why would I want to support such behavior, even in private?
We have tried to be lenient and that comes back to bite us as well. We are accused of being unfair or playing favorites. It's obvious we can't please everyone. We have some that defy the policies now. Do some really think that if the reins were loosened that stated policies would be complied with? I already have a full time + job.
Maybe the next version of vBulletin has a more refined search function.

As far search examples go I think Curless hit on it. Type in a specific thread and you'd think it would be near the top of the first page but if it's anywhere it's 3-4 pages back. I know some search engines like quotes around stuff or + signs and I've tried both with no success. :(
Is there a tutorial of search use in the vBulletin? Maybe it's easy and only Charlie has figured it out.
As far as the other question I like the site like it is but would like new emoticons to pick from and would prefer a built in spell check. Why should the old timers have to change? Youngins' can learn to adapt more readily. JMHO;)
How does the chat room work? Can we BS in there more freely? I've gone there a few times but it doesn't seem to be being used. :dunno:

I too get frustrated by the search function here so if it can be fine tuned that would be great. As for making the site somehow more appealing to some people, I have a feeling that as many as you may please, there will be nearly as many who will not be pleased. This is essentially a niche car club. It has it's own culture and style. It may truly not appeal to some, but it does appeal to many. Speaking for myself, I was welcomed here in 2008 as a female with few car smarts but a huge interest in my Marauder. I was pleasantly shocked that I was accepted. I am a member of at least 2 other car forums, which are far more "rough and tumble" but this is where I can be myself. I credit Mary and the other owners for the general sense of comraderie and positive social discourse that I think brings us together as a cohesive group no matter our age. If I want to hang out on a site where there are no boundries and nothing is off limits, I have other sites I can go to. In fact MOST other car sites I visit are able to cater to even the lowest common denominator if that's what people want. MM.net is a rarity as far as I can see. I think there are plenty of other places on line to indulge in whatever you want. (Except joking about DTRs or saying TWSS. There is a site that will run you out of town for those offenses.) :D But I don't go there because I like to indulge my sense of humor once in a while.
Once again, not asking for the whole site to be an open brawl, not saying the site is not a great place to meet and hang out, not saying that the owners have not done a great job keeping the open forums friendly, just asking for a (singular / non public) section for those of us who want to stay within the Marauder family to have so we can blow off steam with each other.

FINE! foot stomp!!!!!!
Okay, we are all adults (most)
I have been here roughly 18 mos. in that time I have seen some things go and others not so much. I questioned this, got told I was pot stirring (wasn't my intention- that time) I have since then come to the realization people have other things to do other than babysit a forum.
We all have different opinions about what should be acceptable. But it comes down to this: owners forum= owners rules. What's the discussion.
I/we know what is acceptable and what is not 98% of the time. So when and if that 2% gets locked or nuked just smile and nod. Several of us do talk and text and have other forums to say and do what we want. Several times I have posted then went back and deleted. Just my .02

The search function on the site is useless, about as helpful as a mesh umbrella in a monsoon.
If you want to find something use Google to search the site (like previously mentioned).
Open Google window, enter the item you want to find along with mercurymarauder.net and poof... It shows up with no hassles! :)

I'll admit I use google too. You can restrict google search results to a specific domain by using "site:mercurymarauder.net" as a term in your search.
The forum search does work but you have to use exact terms. Google offers a bit more flexibility when using multiple terms.

The search function on this site is very hard to use. Not sure why (possibly how the settings are for looking at key words) but it does seem hard to use sometimes. Could be the amount of information this site has to offer which makes the search engine have fits. It would be nice if there was a way to upgrade it but I am not a computer expert.
