I had to take an hour ride today to pick up a part for the shop and I was doing 75mph steady for awhile and when I went to accelerate up to 80mph the car shuttered. I though I ran over rumble strips but it was coming from the drive train. I suspect the overdrive. It will do do it consistently even at lower speeds like 60-65.

I put it on the lift and checked the u-joints and trans output shaft for play. I also checked the trans fluid-clean and not burnt.

Ideas?

Restricted filter, change filter would be 1st thing I'd try. Simple things 1st.

If still have issue the time to dig deeper... :depress: Bummer!

Torque Converter shudder......was very common in older Panthers especially (before Mercon V)!!:argue:

Add one 4oz bottle of Ford Friction Modifier and see if that fixes it.......I add a bottle every 50K miles and have in every Panther I've owned after I found out about it in the mid-90's!!:beer:

CAUTION: THIS STUFF STINKS SO DO NOT SPILL ANY!!:mad2:

If it fixes it then you might elect to do a flush which effectively replaces additives that have been depleted....your call!!;)

Filter change and refill with the newer Mercon V fluid would be my suggestion. Minimal cost and a first best guess at a correction.

Friction Modifer is about $5.00 from FORD and will give you the answer as to whether it's the fluid or not and it won't hurt a thing (as long as you don't spill it!!)!!:shake:

Try it and if it fixes it you can decide what more to do then, if anything!!

I also checked the trans fluid-clean and not burnt. That means almost nothing. Transmission fluid can LOOK good and still be bad. The additive pack can be depleted even though the fluid is not oxidised or contaminated.

Try what 'jack said above...it it helps, don't simply leave it at that. Do a complete fluid exchange.

I had my trans rebuilt earlier this year mainly because the torque converter was flaring. They also told me my high gear band was just about gone when they pulled it apart. I didn't feel anything yet but they said it would have gone out soon. Not sure if that's what your feeling at the high speed. Just wanted to share what was told to me by Marty's guy who does his Transmissions.
