This will be our third Hot Rod Power Tour and I always like taking an air conditioned station wagon on the trip.

So here is what I am putting together....

We will be swapping in a fuel injected motor and AOD into our already pinstriped 1966 Ranch Wagon:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/DSC00265_Large.jpg?m=130695794 9

My buddy Tony already tackled the Mexican blanket dash cover and seat covers:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Seat%201.JPG?m=1333331 247

I am using the 341 and AOD out of my '91 Church Van for power.

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Wagon%20Church%20Van.j pg?m=1388078061

And of Course I always get an EVTM when we start one of these swap projects since I will be using the processor and harneses from the Church Van.

Got our fuel pump:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Wagon%20Fuel%20Pump.jp g?m=1388078057

And our intake (which is already off to the powder coater):

The valve covers were already powder coated so we can test our our color scheme:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Wagon%20Valve%20Covers .jpg?m=1388083641

Our power front disc brake kit arrived already as well:

After the First of the Year, we will pul apart the Church Van and then start taking apart the existing drive train in the Wagon.

Then all of the reassembling will begin.

This should be a fun, low-buck project.

Anyone else going on the Tour and/or putting something together for it?

Anyone else going on the Tour and/or putting something together for it? Yeah, dad and I are taking the Marauder for 2014. The to-do list is pretty long, but at the very least I'm hoping to throw a set of mufflers on it, install the Addco rear swaybar I bought from RoyLPita, and have the roof and hood paint addressed.

We had been talking about buying and building an easy project (some ideas were a mid-'70s Mopar a la Cordoba, some goofy AMC product, or maybe a '60s full-size Pontiac with an engine swap). But we then decided that we should take a 'known entity' for our first Power Tour so we can see how it goes. Plus, it'll have A/C. :)

If we like it good enough, and it's in the budget, we'll likely build something for 2015.

Side note: that's a badass Ranch Wagon. If we happen to cross paths, I am sure my dad will talk about the time he 'borrowed' my grandma's Country Sedan and hooned it around the block. He was 14.

This is not a light car but the 351 should put down decent power.

I won't know how fast it will be until it is done, but I think it will be decently fast when it is done.

We bought a car cheap just for the tour, its a 1962 Mercury Montery 390 big block and 3 speed on the colum. We are getting it preped already. We will have to meet up and have a

This past Monday we broke down the church van. We got the motor, trans, processor and harnesses out.

Here is the van just before we pulled the motor:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%203-32.JPG?m=1389233077

Not bad for a day when we were also finishing up the AC and stereo install on the '68 Road Runnner and servicing the new 1992 Cadillac!!!

Meanwhile, the new front suspension components should be on my door step tomorrow.

This coming Monday's plan is to break down the and clean up the van motor and hopefully start pulling the motor and trans from the Ranch Wagon.

Well yesterday we did not get to put a full day in because I was dealing with some business stuff and then emissions issues on one of my cars in the early part of the day.

The good news is we got the old motor and trans ready to yank out of the wagon and snatched it out just before it started to rain. Anyone need a 390 motor, C6 trans, or parts?????

And the "black hole" (the temporarily empty engine bay):

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%201-50.JPG?m=1389669228

And here is the old motor and the "new" sitting on the floor. Next Monday if it doesn't rain and I can make room in the shop, we will do the front suspension parts (my kit for that arrived last Friday) or if it rains we will work on getting the 351 and trans dressed and ready to be dropped in.

Chugged away at it some more yesterday.

Our plan was to do the front suspension, but unfortunately they sent me the kit for a Ranchero rather than a Ranch Wagon. After a few calls back and forth with the supplier, they came to understand the difference and sent me a new kit today so I should have it by the weekend. The downside is that the Ranch Wagon kit does not come with new upper an lower arms so we will have to clean up the old ones and reload them with new ball joints. Not the end of the world but it was not one of the places we planned on spending time. Oh well….

Anyway, we got the outdated single bowl master cylinder out and also cleaned up a lot of the wiring cleaned up under the hood and we will redo what is needed after we tuck in the 351.

We also removed the fender liners and brought them to the paint shop for blasting and painting. I am doing them in a sen--gloss black. I will say while we were stripping things down I was impressed to see how good the condition of the frame, floor plans, and body are in this car despite its outward patina appearance.

We also pulled the heater box off the firewall. It is in bad shape and needs to be either repaired or replaced. Today I was able to find one in Canada so I bought it and it is being shipped down. Sometimes finding the parts for these cars is a battle that could not be won without the internet!

The heater box:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Heater%20Box.JPG?m=139 0313767

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Heater%20Box%201.JPG?m =1390313765

What is left under the hood:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%202-52.JPG?m=1390358121

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%201-55.JPG?m=1390358122

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%201-56.JPG?m=1390359365

We also cleaned up the 351 and started reassembling it. The valve covers are on and so is the lower intake. I **** the upper on there so that I could see how it would look when bolted all together. I will also be dusting the trans with fresh paint before it is reinstalled.

The engine as it sits now:

The good news is that I got home and my wife was complaining that there was a heavy box on the front steps waiting for me. Yahooooo! Suspension parts!!!

I know what we will be doing on Monday!!!!!

In the meantime, I think I have rounded up the rest of the brackets that I need for the front of the motor, plus I got new dipsticks (did I mention how loooooong the dipsticks in the donor van were??).

Looks like we should have plenty to do on Monday.

Busy day today although I don't have a ton to show for it.

I got my floor covering ordered from ACC. It will be a blue heavy molded vinyl. They warned me it won't be easy to install but they said it would be worth it. I am going with this instead of carpet because it will go with the theme of the car better. Also because this car will not get a permanent spot in the shop I feel like the vinyl will hold up better.

I also ran down some more blankets so that I can finish up the interior by doing the rear seat cover. I ran short when I had the prior interior work done so I am happy I solved that problem.

We also picked up the fender liners from being blasted and repainted. They came out great and will look good tucked back in the car.

We did get some mechanical work done too.

We pulled apart the passenger side suspension and rebuilt it, which included stripping away 50 years of caked on dirt and beating out factory ball joints and bushings. NO FUN!!!!!

The plan next week is to get the driver side suspension done and hopefully build up the front disc brakes. Then we will mount the power master and do the hard lines for it.

Then it should be on to installing the engine, trans and electronics.

Here are this weeks pics:

The suspension as we started:

Yesterday we got the driver side suspension rebuilt (thankfully it went faster than the passenger side).

We also hung the disc brakes - I think they came out looking pretty good.

I was able to round up almost all of my steering components and the last few bits and pieces shoudl arrive during the week.

We also set the motor in the car to test fit it and the transmission. We ran into a few snags. The rear sump oil pan will NOT work so last night I had to order a front sump pan, new oil pick up and a fresh oil pump while we are there.

Here is how the motor looks sitting in the hole:

Next Monday I have to play a lawyer on TV so I won't get to do much but Jeff said that he would work on fabbing the motor and trans mounts up so that we can keep moving.

The car is really taking shape.

Oh, and my vinyl floor covering came in and looks great. I cannot wait to get it installed. I think it is a good look for this project.

The motor and trans are now set in place, the headers are mounted, and the front brackets are almost all on (power steering still needs to be done).

Getting the motor to fit, particularly the oil pan, was harder than I thought it would be, but with some cutting and welding, it is done.

Well last week was a bust because the weather was lousy and I had a million errands to do. The good news is that I went to Summit and gathered up a bunch of parts for my race car project and now I have just about everything we need to get that rolling.

This week was a different story. We got an early start and got a good bit done. We swapped in a small size starter, got the fender liners back in and secured, did the entire front dress on the motor (AC/PS/Alternator) including sizing and hanging the serpentine belt, and we also got the fuel rails and injectors set up (no thanks to my eBay intake LOL!!). It took a good bit of time to get the front dress done because we had to fab up our own AC bracket but it came out great.

We also test fitted the underdash AC unit and I think it is going to work well. Oh, and we also reinstalled the heater box, heater core, and heater relay and related wiring.

Last night I ordered some more parts - the AC condensor, various fuel fittings, and some exhaust bends and flanges so that we can finish up the exhaust.

The car is finally starting to take shape. Hopefully next week, we will start the wiring although I may fit the AC condensor and radiator first.

I forgot to get pictures as we were wrapping up but I will make sure I take some next week.

Well we got a good bit done today.

We installed the AC condenser and drier and ransome of the AC lines.

We installed the radiator, electric fans, and catch can.

We installed the battery and fab'd up the hold downs for it. We also installed the solenoid and darted some of the main power wiring for the car. We also started working on the engine harness and got the injectors wired.

The car is starting to move along pretty well know. I think we are on target to be done by the end of April (keeping in mind that we generally only work on this project on Mondays.

Here are some progress pictures. Because everything in the engine compartment is black they came out a bit dark. Next week I will try to light it better.

Stripped the donor harness from the van down this evening to get ready for wiring the wagon.

It is amazing how much gets stripped out of the factory harness like the HVAC blower, headlights, etc. I wish that I had taken a "before" picture, but here is the "after"picture that we need to start with next week when we start wiring the car:

Well today was a good and productive day.

We got an early start and got a lot done. We got more than 90% of the wiring done and the car is just about ready to crank. Next Monday it should fire off if everything goes according to plan.

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%203-44.JPG?m=1395711257

In addition to the wiring, which took a pretty good hunk of the day, we also plumb the trans cooler plumbed, the fuel system plumbed and wired, the intake and throttle body are mounted, and some of the vacuum lines have been run.

We also made part of the shift actuator linkage and it came out great.

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%204-27.JPG?m=1395711256

With some more hard work, we should have the car on the road in just a few more Monday's worth of work.

Got a chance to turn the key and she fired right off!!! Boo yah!

Pulled all the interior out and sent the seats out for covering.

Also neatened up the trans tunnel so next week we can patch it back in and get ready to wrap up the interior.

With any luck in a couple of Monday sessions, we should be able to road test her.

This was a good week.

My boy Tony got my rear seat cover stitched up with a quickness. I think it came out great!

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%20Back%20Seat.JPG?m=1396 962074

This weekend Tony and I will be installing the sound deadenerand stretching out and installing the rubber floor covering that I want to use in the car and hopefully buttoning most of the interior up. I will post pics of that. I am expecting it to be pretty difficult because the rubber material is pretty heavy.

I wasn't able to work on the car yesterday but my partner Jeff helped me keep the progress going. He fabricated and installed the new trans tunnel. It looks awesome:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%204.JPG?m=1396961631

He also found a great place for the gauges. He cut them into the dash just below the ash tray. They came out great!

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%203.JPG?m=1396961631

He installed the oil and trans dipsticks which required a little bit of tweaking:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/Ranch%201.JPG?m=1396961631

Jeff also got a bunch of the brakes plumbed and installed the proportioning valve. Tomorrow night we will fabricate the brake rod and maybe finish up the last of the brake lines.

Our plan for next Monday is to finish up the exhaust since all that is left is teh hard part! :D

Another couple of days' work and we should be putting test miles on her!

Well, I started my day getting ready for my interior guy to come over and do some work on the Wagon.

I had to lay out the rubber floor mat so it could loosen up in the sun.

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/albums/Ranch-Wagon/photo%204-29.JPG?m=1397355531

The I cleaned up the interior and got it ready for the interior guy's work:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%201-66.JPG?m=1397355520

The he laid in the hush mat to help quiet down the interior:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%202-63.JPG?m=1397355535

Then some jute padding was laid down:

http://legalknevil.com/gallery3/var/resizes/Ranch-Wagon/photo%201-63.JPG?m=1397355547

After that the rubber mat was laid in and fitted. Then the rear seat was installed. The front seat will be kept out until we finish mounting the air conditioner and some under dash work on Monday. I must say I am really happy with the way the interior is coming out.

Well yesterday was a pretty productive day and by the time the day was done we were able to back the car in and out of teh shop.

We got the fan cicrcuits sorted out wired except for the AC turn out which we still have to wire in.

The brakes plumbing is finished and bled. So now we have plenty of braking power - discs up front and drums out back with a poweer master. We even have the brakes lights working. :D

We fabbed up theflanges and down pipes for the exhaust and welded them up. Now we need to just build the H pipe and weld in an 02 bung.

I also got some baby moon hubcaps and tried them out. I like them with teh steel wheels, so I think I will stay with a white steel wheel, teh baby moons, and just put some fresh tires on before the Tour.

Tomorrow night I hope to get the throttle cable in and maybe do a few other small items.

It is really coming along and I cannot wait to start putting the test miles on!

So last night we completed the exhaust, including the H pipe/balance tube, except for the 02 bung and two hangers which won't take terribly long to complete. I must say despite the crazy "backwards" headers, the exhaust came out great! It sounds really good both inside and out of the car. This can be tricky with wagons because the long exhaust systems always seem to want to drone but I don't think we will have that problem.

We also fabbed up a throttle bracket and return spring arangement and installed the Lokar throttle cable. The pedal pressure seems about right but until I drive the car some it is a little difficulty to tell.

I can't wait until next week - we should be able to get pretty far in wrapping up the car except maybe for teh AC lines because I will be bringing the car to our local hydraulic shop that also makes up our AC lines.

I am pretty excited about taking the car for a test drive and it is getting close!!!

Where is our weekly update??

It is official, the car runs and drives.

Last night we started verifying all of the sensors with a break out box and found a few things that needed some cleaning up but we worked late and made a lot of progress.

On Monday i hope that we will get the last nits and picks sorted out, although it is always hard to predict how long chasing the little electrical gremlins will take.

Meanwhile the car fires off on a half a spin and idles and runs really smooth. It is time for me to fill the tank and cruise it.

If all goes according to plan, we will have it at the alignment shop next Monday or Tuesday and then off to teh hydraulic shop to have our AC line fittings done.

I am close to having the car in shape for me to use it as a commuter like I did with last year's car so that I can stress test it.

Today was a work on the details day.

We got a bunch of wiring straightened out. We tested all circuits and got them all working (including the turn signals, the hazard lights, and the horn - we still need to get the back up lights working). Unfortunately, we found that the EEC (the processor) is not unction in properly which is probably what caused them to place the Church van in purgatory in the first place. I ordered a new EEC today and with any luck I will have to tomorrow.

I also got the front passenger door lock straightened out and the door now opens and closes as it should.

With any luck we will have the new EEC installed this week and then this weekend I will be able to get the last of the interior trim issues straightened out and start putting some test miles on the car.

Then, the plan for next week is alignment and AC lines and then charging the AC system.

I am hopeful that the car is almost wrapped up!!

Well yesterday we wrapped up everything but the AC. Most of it works as it should except for a few issues with the stereo so I need to go see what I screwed up but I am sure it won't be a big deal.

I have all of the AC fitings and ordered the lines today. We will mock them up and then get one of the local shops to crimp the fittings. Once that is done, we will assemble the AC system, vacuum it down, and charge it.

We put some test miles on the car yesterday and dropped it off at the alignment shop for the alignment and new tires. That should be wrapped up today (the tires had to be ordered). For road trips like this, I like a good tire and so they are getting me some BFGs.

The car ran very well during the test miles. The converter locks and unlocks when it should and the trans shifts well. The Over Drive cancel even works.

The car is no rocket ship but it has plenty of power. I was concerned that when we put the shortyer runner intake on it we would lose too much bottom end torque but that does not seem to be an issue so we can stick with the 3.00 rear gear which should help with the gas mileage while we are on the Power Tour.

Once the AC is wrapped up, I will put some city miles on it to give it more of a shake down. My early imoressions are that the car came out even better than I expected.

I will post more pictures soon!

Wrapped up all the details today and git the AC blasting ice cubes!!! I got an under dash unit that is awesome and only ran 119 bucks to my door. It makes the Wagon an ice box!!!

Here are a few pics of the AC, the gauges, and under the hood. As you can see my voltage is a little low so I ordered up a new alternator which tosses out some more umph and will be adding it in soon. On the other hand the motor is running super cool and never gets above 165*! We will see how it holds up tomorrow when I run it into the Atlanta rush hour traffic!

The AC and proof that it is blowing cold:

Oh, and here are some custom stickers that I got to put on the Poverty Wagoon and the other cars in this years crew:

Very cool, Marty.

I just got word that my car will likely not be able to get painted before the Tour. Now I'm debating whether to take it with the dumb crappy paint, or just take my dad's '03 Mustang.

Two kids under 4 that keep me busy. And doing a complete swap. It will end up with a Vortech 302, aluminum heads, T-56, 04 cobra brakes front/rear, coilovers front/rear, tubular k-member....

This is a Ranch, so no rear seats! And yes, the subs do take up a bit of space!!!

I had to work in Atlanta today so Jeff is home working on a few tweaks on it today. The car now has a remote start!!! LMAO!!!!!

There's one that floats around here in a dark green metallic. Dude's got the fattest tires possible on it and is running NASCAR-style wheels on it. No idea what's under the hood because I've only ever seen it in traffic, but I may have fallen in love with that car...

Sorry I'm late to the party....when exactly does the power tour leave Concord to start the trek? Who's showing up and when and what hotel is the party at Fri/Sat night?

Or, stop by our hotel parking lot on Friday night after you check in - the street I'm on has about 8 hotels on it, sure to be a ton of cars. :D

Having grown up in that area and the fact that my Mom lives 5 minutes from Lowe's Motor Speedway, I am familiar with what is where around there. I'd like to join you guys and do the Concord-Knoxville leg as well as any 'pre-game' activities. Just need to know time of departure and arrival of the first leg so I can figure out when I want to get there. After the tour reaches Knoxville, I plan on coming back here to Asheville.
